... in response to what did you think of Barranquilla?, posted by Fuzzyone on Nov 24, 2003

Hello fuzz,
first, i wanted to send a  quick apology for a post I wrote to you earlier, concerning your story. I wasn't trying to be rude, but for some reason, I took it personal that someone would do that to a person. I reacted and posted out of anger, and i am sorry for that. Second, i described my trip in an earlier post(archive 153-re:truth be told), check it out and tell me what you think. One thing about Barranquilla....It's Hotter and humid than anything i've ever experienced. I'm from boston, and we see nothing like that. As far as being clean, I would say I never saw a street cleaner, but I have no complaints about the food. I was just enjoying being in a completly different culture. Wasn't to concerned about safety, I'm a cop, and I know how to handle myself if need be. One time, a day before I was leaving two guys came up to me, and one said in broken english, are you american? Didn't know what they wanted or were up to, So I flipped it on them, and for no reason acted upset, and said firmly "Do you have any money?, answer me..!?" He backed up, and his friends jaw dropped, and he said "vamos!" to his boy while backing up. Then they walked away pretty quickly. I could only smile, and continue my walk. Overall I had a great time, next stop...Cali! take care

I really did not take it personel I needed a butt kicking for doing
something so stupid! It is funny because I am a correction officer from
CT and I can spot a person lying from a mile off but this girl got right
under my radar. Anyway I read your post "truth be told" it was very
interesting thanks for the info. I want to ask you how much were you
paying for these english courses down there?

I'm glad you understand. She went there for one month, but the reason I sent her there was because of what they claimed to offer. I was on the street in barranquilla, and yelled out to a friend of mine in english, and one of the people who run the school heard me, and knew I was from america, and probably had a novia who didn't speak english. He stated that he was a good christian man, and the people who worked there was also good christian people, and I should come by the school to check it out. A little later, I walked to the school(by this point I was walking everywhere because i felt really comfortable here) and I met one of the insructors. She told me she was from new york, and was working on getting certified. She walked away, and i went inside the school. While I was talking to the man who runs it, I decided to ask if all the instructors were certified...he replied yes...I thought....oh really(red flag). He then stated that at his school, he would be my eyes in barranquilla, and keep an eye on my novia, and report to me not only her progress in school, but if she is playing games and is not serious about me. This is what won me over. I put the payment down for the first month(around $260.00 I believe) and went to the mall with my novia, to buy her a cd player, because she would need it, and a english/spanish dictionary( I had one but gave it to her kid brother). To make a long story short, I asked her if she missed any classes when I got back to the states and she said yes, but the school never told me. The only kind of report I got from the school was one line " ********* is doing fine in class". This was far from the progress reports, test results, and updates He promised he would email at least twice a week. After she stopped going and we stopped talking, The school emails me two weeks into the next month and says "******* has stopped coming, you can only pay us for the first week(about $60.00). Well in no certain terms, I told him exactly what i think about him and his school. I know this is a little more than you asked, but once again, just wanted to get the whole story out. take care.

No thats cool I am always interested in hearing the whole story. It is too
bad that it did not work out but at least you found out down there and
not here like me. That was some money to spend on english classes. It is
interesting that you felt comfortable enough to go every where. Anyways
I figured you could not be half bad sine we both are in law enforement.
By the way good luck in Cali you should be able to find that special girl
from what I read you can dance good so the worlds your oyster down
there.

thanks for the kind words. Yes, I had no problem or concern about safety in Barrenquilla. In fact, they appeared to be a little in awe of gringos. I still think barranquilla is newer than cali to this kind of thing. The appointments I had with women were fine, they all showed up on time. I might go back later, but I want to try cali first. take care, and thanks.

Speaking of the heat in Barranquilla, those who might be planning a trip in the next few months will find that is more comfortable this time of year due to "las brisas" or the breezes.  These are just strong breezes that come off the ocean, and always occur late November through January, more or less.
Great job handling the two guys.
