For those thinking of discarding everything and heading south, I stumbled across this:

"A middle aged American (let's call him John) who made big bucks on the States working as a big time lawyer decided to leave it all behind and come to a beach in Costa Rica and open a small Pizza restaurant. He didn't really care about the business, he only wanted to take it easy and so he allowed his Costarrican cook to handle the joint (let's call him Pedro). Pedro a local guy, he only had primary education, but he had a real talent to make pizza, he was also good with numbers and proved to be a good administrator. As the pizza was great, the business thrived and the American had to get involved more and more with the restaurant. John and Pedro became friends, and even though John detested the idea to lose Pedro, he once suggested to him that he should finish school and move on. John thought this was a great idea and showed his humanitarian side, he even said that he would pay him for his studies and he would give him a small loan to start his own business. Pedro looked puzzled and asked him "Have I done something wrong? Why do you want to send me away?" "That's not it" replied John "I am offering you a chance for a better life". "What?" "Yes" said John. "You'll study, get a Diploma, open your own pizza business anywhere in the country, you'll do great, you are smart and you make a great pizza". "But why would I like to do that?" asked Pedro. "Because then you would have money on your own, live a respectful life and then retire, just like I did". "But you worked all your life like a donkey to come down here and do what I do every day: surf, make pizzas and run a restaurant, I like it the way it is, I don't need to go to school to do that".

This story points out the fact that people have different priorites in life.  Not everybody wants or even should be their own boss, hey if he is happy, why rock the boat.  But on the other hand if the ex-abogado ever decides to shut doen the place, then he will be screwed.

Yup. Down to the basics.
Reminds me of a story, when one of the US rubber companies went in to Indonisia in the 30's.They were trying to get the locals to work for them. They said we will pay you money. The locals  said what do we need that for? They told them once you get it you will figure it out.
I went to college 2 years full time and 7 years part time.I never used most of what I learned. Its not 1% of my knowledge and experience. But it did open some doors.I wish I could have some of those Sundays back I spent studying Calculus, which I never ever used for anything.

Or the guy who explains the whole study/work/invest/retire cycle to the Mexican fisherman. The Mexican asks 'What's retire?' and the guy says 'that's when you can fish when you want to, sleep all day and play your guitar and drink with your friends at night'. The Mexican tells him 'I ALREADY fish when I want to, sleep when I want to, play guitar when I want to and drink when I want to'.

The goal is to make your recreation your avocation.Few people get there.
It brings up the question what do we need to be happy? Only what we think we do.
One of the problems with delayed gratification is even when we finally get it it can be disapointing. One of my ex gurus told the story of sitting in hot tub in Los Angeles with a guy who had just made it big in the movie business,he was a writer or producer. He said the guy told him he was thinking of suicide. He said "I was totally unprepared for how little difference it would make."
