very good analysis Michael,
to make things simple and not translate literally you can tell a girl "I like you" = "me gustas"  which is very common.  So if you like a girl tell her that.
or "me caes bien" more or less means "I like you" or "I'm impressed by you"..or "I get along well with you"..........sometimes gringos get too caught up in translating expressions literally, when you should just use the expressions that the native speakers use. Translating everything into english makes things sound awkward.  That's why young children learn a foreign language quicker than adults, they tend to mimic what they hear and not try to over analyize or translate eveything literally.
If you've ever tried translating spanish musical lyrics into english (especially for romantic songs) most of the time you just cringe, because in english the lyrics sound so corny & awkward, but in spanish they are beautiful.

You're right, that's why childern learn so easily, they simply learn 'this is what you say when you mean (whatever)' and they don't have to think 'OK, here's the verb and here's the subject, let me get the right ending on the verb......'
