How much money should I take for a 2 week trip to Cali?
I know about the ATM's there but I think it is still good to have USA pocket money etc.

I just returned from a 1o day trip from Cali as a first timer.  I took 600 just in case money but was going to rely on the atm.  I only used 200 us and that was to pay for the hotel bill.  Use the atm, you get a better exchange rate. Don't worry about the atm eating your card.  Just use the atms that slide your card through only.  There are plenty of those.

Aldo,

trip report please.  I'd like to hear your perception of Cali. Thanks, TNC

USD, not really necessary there.  Most people won't want them because they'll have to change them over to pesos.  The only 2 exceptions I've run into were once when I did a larger financial transaction; the other is that on occassion, I get asked for 1 dollar bills as some people consider it good luck to keep one in their wallet or purse.
I usually just carry enough USD so I don't have to hit the atm's in the airports in Miami or Costa Rica. -TNC

One way to look at is how much cash you would need if the ATMs eat all your debit cards (it could happen!).  As a precaution for that scenario - get your pin #rs for your credit cards that you'll be carrying as well.  So anything up to that extreme would be my suggestion.  There is piece of mind in carrying cash, especially for a 1st time traveller, and you can always put it back in your bank when you get home.
