I took the deposition of the Chairman of the Orthopaedics Department at LSU this morning.  After the deposition was over, I asked him about the ability of hormone replacement therapy to retard the aging process.  He said that it was extremely risky, even with careful monitoring, because the long term side effects are unknown.  (Of course, the long term effects of doing nothing are known.)  He further stated that the future of age retardation or even reversal lies in gene therapy, and that we are 50-60 years away from widespread usage.

Some folks swear by HGH treatments and others think it's a sham... The most effective is the inter-muscular injections, but they can get very expensive, very fast... Most think oral HGH is a waste of time... Couple HGH with DHEA and additional amino / anti-oxidant supplements, along with a healthy diet and exercise does work, for me anyway...

Kind of typical mainstrean medical opinion.Probably 98% of doctors would agree or at least go along with the safety first program.
He mentions possible risk, anythings possible. As you point out he doesn't mention the risk of doing nothing.Palm Springs life Extension makes a big point of that. They say we know exactly what you are going to get if you do nothing,a decline in hormones and health,a decline in quality of life and then you will die.
But more important is the lifestyle change. There are lots of studies on the benefits.Call PSLEI for the imformation packet.
But to me its a quality of life vs longevity.I don't really expect more longevity out of this, just a better quality of life.Quality over Quantity.
I am told the real hope for the future is the possibility of being able to reprogram our DNA to turn the clock back.I'm not sure if thats the same as gene therapy.I was told its 30 years out 6 years ago.BUt we will see.One of the benefits f the high tech age is the tools acan vastly speed up the progress of research. One of my friends thinks the next wave of progress will be in medicine and drugs, just like the last one was computers.
Interesting, they have already done Gene therapy on mice that greatly inreases their muscle mas and strengt.Already done it.The time element comes in looking for side effects in the mice and thenmoving on to human research.
The conservative attitude of medicine is the biggest detrement to medical progress.
I remember stories would come on TV telling of possible AIDS fighting drugs, then they would add the diclaimer that it would be at least 5 years before it could get to market because of FDA rules and testing. Can you immagine some guy dying of AIDS watching that??They are going to let him die while they determine if it is safe?? I bet a few bottles went through the TV set over that one.
In Europe they are much more open to new drugs and proceedures. We may have to go offshore to get access to cures of the future that are not allowed here.
I remember when Harry Brown was running for president in 1996 from the libertarian party. He said he wanted to help the country because "hewas 60 and might be around 20 or 30 years.Who knows, maybe 40 or 50 years if we get rid of the FDA."
I voted or him because by the time the poles opend in California it was all over,Dole could not win.I am a libertarian at heart but I disagree with alot of their ideas, like issolationism.

I think you're the first person I saw on this board from my home town of N.O., just wanted to say hello.
I wouldn't mind some Gumbo right about now in Michigan.  The weather is getting cold.  How does you wife like the food in N.O.  I found it funny that Red Beans and Rice was a major dish in Colombia and funny that they thought it was unique to Colombia.. ha ha.

Well chat later..  Have some Gumbo for me!!!!
