I have very little experience with travel o/s the USA. So I would apprecitate any help with the following questions.
1)I have a passport, however,a Colombian visa- do I get it beforehand at the Colombian Consolute, on the plane, in Colmbian? How long is it valid?
2)Packing-I plan on staying 10-14 days, but I want to pack light. Is causual ok? Do I even need a jacket(Colombian's close to the eqautor), How about a raincoat? Can I pack only 3 days of clothes and get them easily laundered there? Can I have a carry on bag? How prevelant is theft of luggage?
3)Medication-no problem right? Do I need a written prescriptions to avoid hassles. If you read my bio-I'm on testoserone patches which are tecnically steroids and is a controlled substance. Should I get an injection which lasts for two weeks and leave the patches behind?
Should I need Viagra can I get it there or bring my own? Personal question, but I'm 55 not 25 unfortunately and really don't want "performance" problems! Other than that I have blood pressure meds I'll be taking with me.
4) Do I drink bottled water only? What do you guys drink when out on the town? I don't want to drink acohol excessively, sodas, etc. How safe is the water supply in Colombia?
5) I operate mainly in cash and a debit card. I have no credit cards. The debit card is limited to $500 US a day. So how much cash should I carry? Are Visa credit cards no problemo there?
6)Advise on cheapest way to Colombia and back. I can fly out of Logan(Boston) but prefer Manchester, New Hampshire. I'm thinking fly Southwest to New York and then direct to Cali would probably be the cheapest. Suggestions?
7)I'm thinking of staying at Latin Best. Will they pick me up at the airport? Are they a good choice? Which agencies do you prefer and why?
Once I decide should I pay in advance or not? On my first visit is it not a good idea to stay at an agency for the entire trip? I like to go to a gym daily with CYBEX equipment(I do 60 minutes aerobics daily on the Arch Trainer and/or Precor. I also use the CYBEX machines for strength training). Do you know of a gym that has this equipment in Cali? Also is a Pharmacy close by this agency?

I know this is a million and one questions, but I am a total novice and have nothing more than an educated guess to the answers. Help will be very much appreciated. Perhaps these agencies have a pamplet to send?

Thanks for your help in advance!

First of all I very much appreciate all the advise. Reading between the lines if I stay at Latin Best for the full 10-14 days and say I meet a lady and things really click; then it would be ackward for her to come to my room. As there would be an "audience" and of course she probably knows the staff perhaps quite well. So now she would have to deal with gossip too! And finally if things didn't work out, she would lose face. Right? So how long should I stay at LB,and what hotel would your recommend I stay at? Would I then go back to LB, and they arrange for more dates and hang out there in my off time? Or do you think I should another agency or Plan B or what?

It says in your profile that you speak spanish fairly well so I would recommend that you not stay at an agency for more than a couple of days. Unless you are one of those guys that swears off intimate relations before marriage and there are a couple on this board. It will quickly become a liablity staying at an agency.

First of all your time in Cali is way to valuable to waste even one hour IMHO. If you really speak fairly good spanish stay at a nice hotel and join more than one agency. Latin Encounters, All Colombian Girls and Latin Best are all fairly close to the Intercontinental Hotel.

Next make appointments each day at one of the agencies. Go out every night with one of the ladies and during the day you should meet as many women as you like. You should be dating as many as 4 women at a time. You can not do this if you are staying at an agency. Do not talk about the the women you are seeing with anyone especially the women that work at the agencies.(That means if you want to see the lady again you need to get her phone number so you don't have to ask the agency to call her again )Most won't ask about your dates and if they do just say everything went find and change the subject. Above all do not get caught up in agency politics and do not talk about other agencies or your personal business. Remember that althought you are paying the agencies and they should really be agents for you. They are not! They are really friends of the lady members and you are just a visitor.

Oh by the way if it becomes obvious that you are in an intimate relationship with one of the female members and it doesn't work out. You will have to deal with the gossip too!!!

Beware of the american clients that fancy themselves as friends of the lady members. They'll rat you out to.

You'll know pretty quick if you like the B&B setup - some guys like it, some don't.  You can check out the hotels closeby when you get down there - the agency or your novia will be able to assist.  It looks like you got some good answers to your initial questions.

I'd make one additional comment on the water - if you're not that well travelled definitely don't drink it, I've noticed that many native Colombians don't drink from the tap - or they have a filter - kind of depends on the water lines in the particular barrio.  I've found that afer awhile your system will adjust, but 10-14 days isn't that much time.  The water may not be bad per say but it's different and contains different "bugs" than what your used to - that alone can make you sick, just as I've witnessed Colombians visiting the states have problems with our chlorinated tap water initially.    Good idea to pack some pepto tablets just in case.  You can never go wrong with bottled pop, beer etc.. - just drink from the bottle (and wipe the top with napkin before hand).

1. Just a valid US passport will suffice; they will stamp it at the airport in Cali for either 30 or 60 days.  FYI, if for some reason you think you are going to stay past the date allowed, make sure you got to the DAS BEFORE the time allotted expires.  DAS is  on Av. 3 & Calle 52, you'll pay a small fee (I think it's 110K pesos, get some pics taken and they'll give you another 30 days.  If you do it after your expiration it's a real mess and there are fines involved.

2.  Casual is fine as long as it’s nice casual, for first date/impressions I prefer business/dress casual.  Calenas are vain, and you don't have to be a knock out but they do like men who are concerned about their appearance.  At least until you get to know them, after that anyone who knows me can attest that I'm usually in shorts but again that's just me.  Laundry is easily accessible and you are allowed one carry on I believe.  I've never had any bag stolen, but then again I don't leave them until I give them to the airlines.  It's been raining off and on this week but a raincoat is not required.

3. Your meds should be no problem, and you can easily get viagra at the farmacias.

4. I don't buy bottled water unless I'm out; at my home I drink it straight from the tap.  I think you'll be fine within the city.

5.  As CaliVet said, debit cards will work at Servibanca by Exito.  Some atm's only allow the first 4 digits of your password, don't let that freak you out as the transaction usually goes through.  Servibanca & Colmena allow all 6 digits, ATH ones will only allow 4 but the transaction will still work.  How much cash you carry is

6.  Do a web search or look in your larger metro newspapers for a fare consolidator.

7.  When possible, I prefer not to pay for things in advance just in case there are any problems.   Ensure you're getting what was agreed upon and then pay.  Also, depending on the length of your trip, I would only stay at the agency 3 days or so to get comfortable with the area and get to know a few agency employees, ladies you may be interested in and other Americans staying there, after that a hotel has more privacy.  I don't recall seeing cybex equipment at Atenas Gym on Av. Sexta & Calle 44N, but they do have bikes, stair masters and treadmills along with free weights.  Perhaps you could modify your routine while you're down there.  There are bigger nicer gyms in town that should have the cybex equipment, just ask at the agency.

Have a great time -TNC

Sadly Atenas is closing and that one over on tercera and 47 seems to be the next closest to La Flora. There's a real fancy one on Sexta above a Sandwitch Cubano but it costs $65.000 a month (Atenas was $45.000) so the day rate must be sky high. If he goes to Latin-Best he'll probobly have a hard time paying later. She often won't even let a guy look through more than one  album without paying full pop up front.

1. You don't need any visa unless/untill you plan to marry in Colombia.
2. No jacket no raincoat and the agencies provide laundry service. Luggage theft is not prevelent. Bags do get waylaid sometimes during the heaviest travel times like Christmas but show up a day or so later at the airport. Happened to me just once in four years of trips.
3. You shouldn't encounter any problems with prescribed medicines and viagra is available in the local pharmacies.
4. Yes drink bottled water. You shouldn't experience any hygenic problems with mixed drinks at discos however if going to a disco best to go with another couple so someone is always with the drinks. A not nice person may try to slip scopalomine to you in order to later rob you.
5. Debit card (mastercard or visa) is the best way to go. Don't make any mistakes with your pin though as the machines here are quick to lock your account. Get some cash at an ATM the morning after you arrive. If you stay at Latin-Best go to the Servibanca ATM facing the parking lot at Exito to withdraw up to $400.000 pesos then if you want more go inside to the little banks and use the the first ATM on your left, not Conavi, to withdraw another $400.000. That will be all you can withrdaw for that day.
You will get a little more than 2800 pesos to the dollar if you're comming soon. Bring a calculator.
6. Don't know.
7. Latin-Best will arrange to pick you up at the airport. There is a pharmacy inside Exito, a giant department store a five minute walk from L-B. That is Calle 52 at Avinida 4 (cuarta). For a gym walk three blocks east to Avinida 3 (tercera) then five blocks south on tercera to Calle 47. There's a gym close to the SE corner of Calle 47 on Avinida tercera.

---Well (even though there are plenty more expert than I) I'll take a stab at some of your questions.

1)I have a passport, however,a Colombian visa- do I get it beforehand at the Colombian Consolute, on the plane, in Colmbian? How long is it valid?

---They will stamp your passport with a tourist visa when you get there, the immigration inspector will hand write on the stamp how many days it is good for. He wrote 60 on mine, which I understand is normal. You don't need to make any visa arrangements in advance.

---Casual is fine, slacks or nice jeans, button down shirt or nice pullover with a collar, like a golf shirt, I wouldn't recomend bringing your car fixing clothes or gang colors. Might want something you can wear a necktie with, but not a 'must'. You won't need a jacket for the weather. Raincoat? Optional, it does rain, but you won't be outdoors that much. My lady did my laundry at her house, but most of the hotels have laundry service. Yes, you can have a carry on and I wouldn't let my luggage out of my sight (except when checked with the airline or hotel, of course).

---Much more medicine is availble OTC or with a brief consultation with a pharmacist then in the US, HOWEVER, a lot of fairly common medicine that we are used to in the US is not availble there. (As my doctor puts it: Everything they have is easy to get, they just don't have anything you need.) Why not just get the injection and be sure? Viagra? Don't know, I'm only 53, never had that problem. BTW, I've heard that you shouldn't use V if you have blood presure problems.

4) Do I drink bottled water only? What do you guys drink when out on the town? I don't want to drink acohol excessively, sodas, etc. How safe is the water supply in Colombia?

---I've never had that problem, but then I've lived in Mexico and didn't have it there either. I ate everything, drank everything.

5) I operate mainly in cash and a debit card. I have no credit cards. The debit card is limited to $500 US a day. So how much cash should I carry? Are Visa credit cards no problemo there?

---The same ATM networks (Cirus, Plus etc) are in place there, no problemo, although a given machine may only be hooked to one of the networks and you might have to look at two or three machines to find one that works with YOUR network. Every day just take out what you think you need for pocket money that day. The ATMS actually give a better rate of exchange than the money changing houses and are a lot less hassle than traveler's checks etc. Most hotels will take ATM cards (if they have Visa or MC logo) for the hotel bill, but not as many stores and resturants as here. Might want to make a payment on your hotel every two or three days to avoid it getting over the limit (i.e. you go to pay the hotel for 10 days all at once, say $700 and it comes back declined for over the daily limit). Something else, stop by your bank and TELL them you are traveling overseas, to make sure your card will be valid when you go to use it. Some of them take it upon themselves to 'protect' you from foreign transactions (thinkg that the card, or at least the numbers, have been stolen)

6)Advise on cheapest way to Colombia and back. I can fly out of Logan(Boston) but prefer Manchester, New Hampshire. I'm thinking fly Southwest to New York and then direct to Cali would probably be the cheapest. Suggestions?

---Don't know, I live in Texas. I do know that when you leave the Cali airport to return home that there is an airport tax. If you go to the government tourism office and get a UAEAC stamp on your passport they will lower the tax. The lower price is $28US, the regular price is $60 or $70?. The office is on the second floor of the airport, in a mezanine above the main waiting room. I can't remember the exact name of the office, but you should be able to find it.

---No comment, I never used an agency, I went to meet only one lady that I had already been corresponding with. I'm sure that if you don't like an agency they won't hold you prisoner, getting back any money you may have paid in advance may be a different story, I'll leave the agency recemondations to those who have used them. I know nothing about gyms either, however pharmacies are everywhere (but the pharmicist won't speak any English).

I know this is a million and one questions, but I am a total novice and have nothing more than an educated guess to the answers. Help will be very much appreciated. Perhaps these agencies have a pamplet to send?

---Do the agencies have a phamplet to send? No, but most of them have websites, see the agency links right here on P-L, to the left of where the messages are posted.

Thanks for your help in advance!

---Have a great trip.

I'm sure someone on here can answer all those for you, but I can also recommend a series of travel books called Fodor's. Buy the one called Fodor's South America. Lots of practical, accurate info there.
