Nice trip report. I often don't finish posts that are as long as yours, but you held my interest with your interesting "to the point" description of Peru.

One thing that took me for surprise is that every where we went the country was functioning on a completely dual currency system. You even have to choose whether you want soles or dolares out of the atm machines.

It is nice to be able to use both!! The only thing they arent to crazy about are one dollar bills, the rest is ok, except the one dollar bills....they dont get the full exchange rate when they cash in one dollar bills so a lot of places wont take them...unless your leaving a tip...then of course they wont turn them down. Also, you need to be aware of fake soles....coins and bills. You need to check them out when they give them back to you. If you noticed everytime you gave money to someone they held it up to look at it close. They have a bit of a problem there with people making fake money. One of the people who exchanges money on the street tried to give my wife's aunt some fake money....she didnt notice until she tried to buy something and they shopkeeper told her it was fake....they went straight back to where the guy was, and they were lucky...he was still there...but was having an aurgument with another lady ..who he had did the same thing with her but was caught...his bad luck was ..the lady had a friend who was a cop there....so he got busted.

... in response to about dollars and soles in Peru, posted by Golden on Sep 3, 2003

Coming out an "Indian Market" (filled with foreigners) in Miraflores we ran into a man standing in the street holding up his open billfold containing a bunch of bills and asking for change. I laughed in his face and my wife scolded me for being rude. It's about the only one I haven't seen in Cali.

yes, that was also a nice change, being able to use soles or dollars wherever you wanted. i didnt have to worry about running out of sols like in colombia, where you always have to have extra pesos around because nobody will accept dollars.

Does not the child automatically become a US citizen? Does this give the women some rights or some sort of recourse?

If the woman can prove paternity of a US citizen, then she has recourse in a US court of competent jurisdiction over the father.  As to citizenship of the child, I think that that is controlled in this instance by country of birth.

I think the child would have to be born on American soil?  Maybe our resident attorney can answer that one.

Great report. Sounds like a very full four days. Glad to see that Matchingsys gets another recommendation as the issue of good agencies in Peru comes up constantly.

As for the lady in Texas, keep us updated. She also needs to consult a family law attorney while in Texas, because making Mr. Slime Ball pay child support would not be that difficult. I'm sure Keith S. from NY could provide some information on how that's done.

The girl needs to see a family lawyer AND an immigration lawyer.  A US court will order the man to pay child support, as long as the woman is granted joint or full custody of the child.  The location or citizenship of the woman is immaterial.  The man will be on the hook until the child reaches 18 or 21, depending on certain circumstances.  If the man fails to pay, he can be criminally prosecuted.

Thanks for an accurate report, glad you enjoyed it and keep us posted. When I was in Lima and was still single, I was impressed at how easy it was to strike up a conversation with women in public. Go to some of the smaller towns and you will be treated like an absolute celebrity.
