Hi Red,

I would only bring gifts for your pen pal, her parents and siblings. Gifts that only cost a few dollars, start to add up when you are buying for the whole family. You will be surprised at how fast the family grows. Then it becomes expected each time you visit or on holidays. I know several people that this happened to. They spent around $1000 on presents for extended family members and were called cheap, because they didn't give big gifts. Americans have an image of being rich and by Philippine standards they are. But you can't afford to please everyone. If you become engaged, you may have a party that will cost additional money.

1. Make sure you bring (or buy in PI) plenty of chocolate in various forms, to share with family and friends. They love it and really appreciate it.

2. Women like Levi's jeans (probably men too), perfume, cremes, soaps and other toiletry items. With the exception of Levi's, these items don't have to be expensive. When buying clothing, remember that Filipinas are usually very small by US standards. I had to shop in the junior's section. I got a lot of strange looks from clerks, mothers and teenage daughters.

3. Inexpensive watches make nice gifts. The latest musical CD's are also enjoyed, as everyone loves to sing and music is heard everywhere. Even 2 year-olds know the English lyrics to the latest pop tunes.

4. For the men I was able to find nice leatherman style multi-purpose tools at a reasonable price. Some come in sets with other knives, tools, and/or flashlights.

5. For my fiancee's niece, I brought a doll. Even the small boys enjoyed playing with it. LOL

Talk with your pen pal about it. She will probably tell you not to bring anything...well, except for the chocolate. ;o)) But, she may be able to offer some guidance.

I saw the doll in that picture you e-mailed me of you and Marife's niece.

TNeal offered a good suggestion recently......wait until you get there to get most of the gifts.  This way you won't have to pack them and also if you purchase candy it will not be so likely to get melted.

I think this is a good idea.

Best of luck.  We're excited for you.
