Political asylum is the immigration equivalent of an insanity plea.  It's another way for lawyers to get richer and their clients to bypass the system.  If what those people want is political asylum they can go to 100 other countries.  Why do they all end up in Florida?  Because they want the good life in the USA.  Me too, but where do we draw the line.  Why not open the borders and let everyone in?  The system is broke.

Give me your tired, you poor, your muslim student pilots that don't want landing lessons.

I worked with a guy from Ethiopia. His only politics was looking out for himself,he was a pretty creative entrepeneur. When the communists took over 20 or so years ago it it was possible to enter the US on political assylum and he wasted no time doing just that, bringing his wife and his mother with him.He was real glad the commies came along, otherwise he might have never got here.
You really can't blame people for wanting what we were so lucky to be born in to.But if you are not going to let everyone in you have to have some rules to enforce that.
The company my wife works for has alot of illegals.I guess if they give the company some sort of a false document the company is not liable but has to fire them when the government comes back and says hey, this is a fake SS #.
My wife worked 7 days last week instead of 6,flling in for someone who was fired over false documents. They were actually surprised that my wifes papers were all legit.
"Hey,your legal."  "Thats what I told you" she says.

So you are for stricter immigration policy? I assume you would not include the k1 visa process in that? I mean it is every man's right to just go back and get another one when it doesn't work? If Colombianas really just want "nice" guys, why don't they marry guys from Iceland, South Africa, Australia etc?

Maybe they just want the "good life" that the US has to offer?

So, let me get this straight. People in fear for their lives, and having their families threatened, who are willing to leave everything they own behind to work menial jobs, are similar to criminals pleading insanity?

OTOH, if you marry a HOT chick, and she dumps you, you can just go back and get another HOT chick? If the 2nd one doesn't work, I assume you feel you should be able to keep trying till you find a HOT chick that will last? How many tries is OK? 2? 3? 5? 10? 20? There might be a shortage of HOT strippers, so I guess this is a great way to help the economy;-)

Hey I'm most likely working on attempt number 2, but at least I'm not being hypocritical about it.

I don't believe that you can equate political asylum requests with K1 visa requests.  I believe that citizens of this country should have the right to marry anyone they want from any country and have them live here with them (and, yes, as often as they friggin want).  I don't believe that foreign citizens should have a right to expect the US to grant them residency just because their life is in danger in their own country.  Pretty soon we'll need to grant residency to anyone from a country that doesn't offer them good nutrition or health services.  Why not?  It puts their life in danger.

If you don't agree, fine.  I'm not being hypocritical.  They are two completely different situations.  The ages of the parties, the beauty of the girl, the success of the marriages are all irrelevant.  But they do add color to your counterpoint.

he he he he, that is a good one. real trivial reason.

Stricter immigration laws would most likely be across the board. Outside of this board there are just as many people that feel that we should marry someone from the states rather than bringing in more people from poor nations that just might be looking to better their lives rather than be madly in love.

Those people might say, if it is really about love, YOU move THERE.

So be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

You wrote:

Ralph, those people would have a hard time defending that position.  How could they?  If people in the US feel she should not move here, what do the people in Colombia feel?  Maybe they will feel the husband should not move there.  So what can an international couple do?  Do they have to live in separate countries?  Do they have to live on a boat in the ocean?  The statement "... move there" is a non-starter, and you probably know it.

But beyond that, if there is one thing that you and I can agree on, it may be this:

If the USA has a shortage of anything, it has a shortage of beautiful, young women.  In fact, in my opinion, a country can never have too many beautiful, young women.  Beautiful women are probably the most prized possession on the planet.  As one beautiful woman sang:

Nations go to war over women like you
It's just a form of appreciation

So what?

So men like me (selfless, magnanimous men) who have risked their lives and spent thousands of dollars to bring these treasures back to the US should be applauded.  Nay, we should be rewarded.  But no, I did this (twice) asking for no rewards, no government grants, no testimonials.  I have been rewarded enough.

And I have every natural, inalienable right to do so.  To legislate different would be an offense against mankind.

i agrre with this, instead of comming to the USA and making us tax payers pay for your new life, why not stay in your own country and fix your own problems. why do you think we have so many people wanting to come here legal or illegaly, because they know that its easy to work the system.

We have also benefited by basically taking the best and the brightest from the rest of the world. We are an immigrant country and we have to a large extent gotten the cream of the crop.We wouldn't be what we are ,the worlds number one economic power without them.
Even people doing menial jobs provide a valuble service to us that lowers or cost of living.
I personally have alot more problem with US citizens that think the government owes them a living. They can't get a job but the immigrants can?Yeah, because they are not afraid to work.I know a young Mexican guy who married my wifes friend.I'm not sure what his legal status is,but he works 2 shifts at different restaurants every day.He leaves home at 7.00AM,gets back at 12PM.How many of us would work that hard?Think this guy will wind up on welfare?Nobody told him he was disenfranchised so he just went and got a job,2 in fact, instead of whining.
I saw this young black woman interviewed on 60 miniutes I think .She was like 21 with 2 kids. She was obviously a very bright person. She said flipping hamburgers was never going to cut it so society should send her to college to get her PHD.I thought at least she has some ambition. Then I thought, hold it,how about the millions of people flipping burgers and doing other jobs they don't like who would be paying for her to go to school? And what will that PHD be in?probably victimology, its awfull, you owe us more.
I know we can't let in everyone who wants to ome here, but I don't blame them for coming here, legal or otherwise.I have respect for people with ambition that are willing to work hard.I think we are better off for them, not worse off.
And I would like to do a little exchange student program with our disenfrancisees.Trade them with people from a poor Mexican village.
