If most calls are to one number, buy a used/refurbished laptop and haul it down there, I virtually eliminated phone bills after doing that .  With a pc cam and yahoo messenger, seems like they actual prefer it over a regular phone call.

One of the main reasons I bought my wife family a computer was so we could do these computer phone calls. The receptions was awfull, almost impossible to hear what they were saying. We gave up on it even if it was free.

I haven't tried that lately either, that sucked a few years ago for me too when I tried it.  With that free messenger service, they just type back and forth and can view eachother on the PC as they do it.  Something about new advances in video compression permit it to work with dialup connections (it's a bit delayed at times but works pretty damn good).

I understand they've significantly upgraded that internet telephone technology however, I just haven't got around to trying it(my wife uses phone cards so I haven't had to deal with this recently).  Basically, $100 dollars for hardware then you can make PC to phone calls for 5 cents a minute to Colombia.  One such service that I've heard of is quicknet.  Has anyone tried these lately?

How does this compare to just using Instant Messenger with a web cam?

Not sure if I understand your question.  The instant messenger does not send voice packets, so it's just a video box and a text box - but it's scotch free assuming your internet connection's are covered.  They love that video.

No, my wife used something within Instant Messenger, I think it was Microsoft Netmeeting and I got streaming video and audio, though the video quality was like 1 frame every 2 or 3 seconds since I am on a 56k modem at home.

Craig,
My wife might hit that some months, more like 30 probably. But she has phone cards for $.05 a miniute so a 30 min call is $1.50.When I first met her I was just picking up the phone and dialing.I had an MCI plan that was supposed to be good.It was awfull for Colombian calls,$3 a miniute.
They need to call alot. With the right phone card its not expensive.

ElColombiano,
Go buy an "L.A. Aggressive" Phone card.  It's good from Los Angeles or O.C.   Call Colombia for $.08 a min.  There are no conection charges so, you can make multiple calls on one card.

I usually buy it at a 7-11 (or such like).  Not everyone has it.  You might have to go to a spanish type neighborhood (Santa Ana?)  to find it.  I could tell you exactly were to buy it in the valley.  I have seen them for sale in Venice too but, this might be a little out of your way.  Buy one $5 card and see how you like it.  I have tried others but, L.A. Aggressive is the best I have found.

Yea I did that Pete I bought an 80 min phone card. It lasted one day. I'm so spent I would have been better off standing on the corner 42nd and Broadway with my wallet wide open and a sign stating "please take what you can carry"

Remove long distance service from your phone, local only.
If anyone wants to make a long distance call, they can buy a card. She used up an 80 minute card in one day? Tell her she can buy the next one.
