... in response to I wish. I've been 2 of the past 3 years...., posted by anzo on May 20, 2003The last time I went to a TLC social was in the summer of 1997 and there weren't any guys sitting around the lobby cherry picking the social or people from the agencies trying to get the women to join their marriage agency.
But, I was staying at the Intercontinental last year while the TLC socials were going on. I talked to alot of the guys that were there and asked them if they would be interested in going to the agencies to see what is available to them in Cali. A few said yes but the majority by far would just clam up when they finally realized that I was not on the tour with them and that I wanted them to get in a taxi and go some where. I had a hard time believing that guys would travel all the way to Colombia and not go two miles in a taxi to see an agency that might help them in their search.
My question is: What the heck do they tell these guys that make them so aprehensive to leave the hotel or have any dealings with people that are not on the tour with them.
Do they really believe that I am going to kidnap them or rob them or something?
It really blew my mind when I saw thirty guys lineing up to get on a bus to go two miles to Chipichapi. I asked one of the guys why he just didn't walk out the front door and get a taxi. He said he didn't speak any spanish so he wouldn't be able to tell the taxi driver where to go. I said you would only have to say "Chipichapi" and it would be imposible to get lost because I think every taxi driver in the city knows where the Intercontinental is located.
I remember being a little freaked out the first time I traveled to Colombia but I was traveling by myself. What I really want to know is in general where are these guys coming from. Are these guys really scared or am I coming across like a used car sales man? Or are they just indifferent to exploring other opportunities in Colombia?
