I called AA before I purchased her ticket, because I was also curious if it would be a problem now.  No problem.  She even told me to call back after I purchased my ticket online and she would make some comments on it.  I bought the ticket, called back and she took my information as her emergency contact and she took her phone number in Cali.

Also I was concerned about how to list her name on the ticket.  The name on her passport or the name (married name) on her visa.  AA told me to put her first name and her last name (maiden) in the first name box and then put her last name (married) in the lastname field.  She had encountered this before and she said this format would answer any questions that could come up.

The fine print on the airline tickets I have purchased since 9-11 from US carriers have said that the purchaser and the traveller must be the same person or in the travelling party.  It seems to be a security precaution to disallow ticket purchases by someone who is not going to be on the flight.

Those guys who have been able to buy tickets for their novias on their behalf please tell us if there were any special procedures you had to go through.

I have purchased many a ticket since 9/11 for my wife and friends of hers visiting on visas - I have not run into any problems.  You do need to typically have the original purchase receipt to avoid problems - I ran into that once but the traveller was able to talk around it.  This has been exclusively with American and also with AeroRepublica while in Colombia.

Delta has direct flights from Bogota to Altanta... You can purchase an eticket online via the delta website and send your gf the confirmation number for check-in the day of the flight... American would be my second choice, but she will have to deal with Miami...

My wife was quoted better fares today by purchasing a paper ticket through a travel agency in Bogota... But this was for the Bogota - Houston route, which is serviced by Continental... You can have your gf call some travel agencies in Bogota to shop price... There are many agency specials listed in El Tiempo... The only problem with this is that you will have to send her the funds via Moneygram or by some other means so she can pay for the ticket...

BTW, in the airlines infinite wisdom, it's ALWAYS cheaper to buy a round trip ticket as apposed to a one-way ticket... Even if she has no intention of using the return portion of the fare...

As always, just my 2 cents... Your mileage may vary...
