Well they got me esos hijo putas! I went to take money out at the ATM at the 7-11 in Menga and the transaction went through with receipt etc. but no money popped out. I stood the pondering the receipt for a while and a taxi pulled up and two guys hopped out and approached. I thought they were going to use the ATM so I said "There's a problem". One whipped out his celular phone and appeared to be reporting the "problem" to the bank. I realized afterwards he never entered the both to read the number. They took off and I stayed around for awhile then went and called the bank. I told the bank what happened and they had me fax the receipt and my cedula to their office in Bogota. I realize now the taxi guys had rigged the machine and must have been watching from up the street a ways waiting for a victim then returned after I left. My wife has since explained that in such cases you wait right there and have someone call the police. Had I realized what was going on, that it wasn't a bank error I'd have done just that. The bank says it will investigate and I'm to call them back on Monday. Hmmm...I don't have high hopes. It wasn't a fortune but I've learned a lesson. And here it is: always use ATMs in commercial centers like Chipichapi (a guard is stationed two meters from the Servibanca ATM there) and Unicentro or those located at banks during business hours so you can immediatly complain inside. Better luck to the rest of you.

Ouch!!  I second that recommendation about the ATMs in the shopping centers - my favorite being Unicentro.  I also only use the type that allows you to swipe the card as opposed to one that swallows it.  As a precaution, I still try to have somebody "watching my back" - making sure nobody is observing with intent of following later.
