Looks like Patrick has excised the part of the the "My thoughts about Brazil" thread that had turned into a bickering match.

Iswote,

It did not have to go that far. I made a personal statement why I don't want to visit Brazil to look for a wife. I would go there though for vacation, but I'm not interested in dating Brazilian women. YES...I mispoke about the current situation of the AIDS epidemic. I admitted that yesterday. Some people just wanted to continue, then talk about my level of maturity.
Was that necessary? Then, when I told people that I don't need to get bogged down (i.e., a time when I was willing to end the argument) because I have other more pressing issues, people started to talk about my education.
Someone called me a "career student". Was that really necessary?

The point I think Patrick is trying to make with deleting the thread is that there doesn't need to be any bickering, name calling, making inaccurate judgments about a person's character and/or maturity level, and intentions what so ever.

I will admit right here and now, that I may have posted before that pulled the chain of others, but I never turned it into a bickering match. What annoys me sometimes is that others start to bicker, and are egotisitcall; but from reading their past posts from their experiences, they really don't have anything to be proud about.

This is all I'm saying. I am not directing it to anyone.

Take care,
Aaron

Yes I know Aaron, people really took advantage of your easygoing nature.  Actually I was talking about every else on the thread who was bickering.  It was clear you were just defending your good name.  Frankly I don't know how you stand all these dolts that post here.

PS Hope your 45 undergradudate students let you know how lucky they are to have such a good teacher as you.  With you dissertation hanging over your head and your two trips to Colombia in front of you, obviously you don't have a spare second to waste so you taking on teaching that class as well is something they should be appreciative of.  I know everyone here at P-L sure appreciates you taking time out of your hectic schedule to keep everyone on track.

Iswote,

If you only spoke spanish and had a bubble butt, I might just propose !!!!! You really now how to make a guy feel good. Keep it up, and you wont have any problems on the home front.

BTW, how I handle my students is a totally different method. My whole attitude about scholarship is that the grades don't matter, but the attitude towards learning does. This is why I'm not going to let anyone fail the course.

The lowest grade I'll give is a C+. For those that really want to learn, they usually descide to go above and beyond the call of duty on their own. So, when it comes to my life, WELL I DON'T HALF STEP.

Thanks,
Aaron

This is off-topic, but now we know one source of grade inflation; judging attitude towards learning as opposed to judging mastery of the material to be learned.

However, if that method of grading is part of that learning institution's philosophy then a good job of matching the teacher to the college was done.

(I happen to be a teacher as well.  That is why I commented.)

Brazilophile, I think you're comming from my corner. I used to be a teacher too, both HS and college (OK, a small, private 2 year college, but accredited none the less), and I say "Saints preserve us from so called 'learning institutions' with 'charity grading' philosophies"...I want a surgeon or a welder or even a truck driver who KNOWS what he or she is doing, thank you very much. I have no use for institutions which turn out half trained graduates nor for those who cheapen the degress which I had to EARN.

I taught Spanish in the schools and have also taught various mainframe computer classes on the job, what's your field?

Brazilophile,

Let it go, please !!!!!!!!!!!!!

One, I was responding to a gentleman who showed unparalled courtesy on my behalf. Then, you respond to undermine the exchange. Yes, it was slightly off topic for the board, but it was pleasant communication between two people. Your comments were of poor taste, and I wonder what motivated them.

My students are still going to get at least a C+, do you know why, it is because I want to be a NICE GUY, and I enjoyed teaching them.

Now, as for my experience from going through a Ph.D. program, did a teacher ever cut YOU slack in your benefit?

How did you do on your comprehensive or candidacy exams? Were your GRE, MCAT, SAT, ACT, GMAT scores up to par?

For me, I like teaching, and I will give a decent grade as long as someone puts forth effort. However, my area of expertise is in theoretical and applied research. When I hit the lab, and fire up my PCs, the GPA goes out the window.

Brazilophile, you know I happened to be blessed to take a class of the legendary C Radhakrishna Rao, who is a statistics guru. He's 80 years old, and still has his own research lab, and still earning recognition.

During his class, he was not concerned about the grades students earned because IT'S ALL KARMA ANYWAY. Do you understand? What comes around goes around. This small, humble, and intelligent world recognized Indian scholar autographed my text book. And, he encouraged me to pursue my education even after I finish my Ph.D.. He said education is a life long pursuit, and if I considered to study more in his area, I would make allot of achievements.

Don't tell me about what a Ph.D. program can do to an individual, or about grade inflation for that matter. That doesn't interest me. My doctoral program has been a thing that I've started for spiritual and intellectual fulfillment.

Are you sure you want to marry a colombian?  It seems to me than a liberal American girl is more up your alley. I am not sure how the mostly conservative colombianas are going to take to your new age, liberal, feel goodisms....I am not trying to be smart...you really strike me as someone who would get along better with a lefty American chick.

Bruce,
Sometimes Patrick, with alot of reluctance I think, wipes out threads that turn negative.Posts within the thread that were not negative go to.
Its his  judgement,he usually gives people quite a bit of latitude first.
