Wednesday morning I called the Latin Euro ladies to try to catch them before they went to work.  Of the ladies I reached, only 1 could meet me that day.  We met in mid-afternoon in Pelourinho.  She came with her older sister and her 10 year old niece.  We went to a small restaurant to talk.  She was 23 and absolutely gorgeous.  Her picture on the LE website does not do her justice.  Her sister was as unattractive as she was attractive.  She was very overweight, had crooked teeth, and had no sense of grace or femininity.

The LE lady said she had received many letters but not mine.  She had agreed to meet me solely on the basis of my postcard.  Only 1 other man had come to visit her.  They said he turned out to be involved with organized crime.  It wasn't clear to me exactly what he did but he was important enough for his name and presence in Brazil to be published in a newspaper.  After 30-35 minutes of more or less superficial conversation, the sister asked me if I was religious.  On the phone that morning the LE lady had also asked me if I was religious but didn't make a big deal about my answer.  The sister, on the other hand, looked as though she had seen a ghost.  "Why not?!?!?!?!?"

The 2 women were both very religious and belonged to evangelical churches.  I gave some reasons for not being religious but this just animated the sister more.  For the next 45 minutes or more, the sister and I discussed religion, with her throwing in some preaching for good measure.  The LE lady, who was somewhat shy, said next to nothing during this time.  It was now the sister's show and she was right in her element.  It was established that the LE lady needed to marry a religious man and I realized that I had absolutely no chance with this woman.  When they needed to get home for dinner I bid them adieu expecting to never see them again.

The Evangelical church is big in Brazil with 1 church having more than 1 million members. I have seen it throughout Latin America, with so many poor people their faith is the only thing that gives them hope, I wouldn't like to take that away from them.

The Evangelical church in latin America, however is changing, moving away from being otherworldly to more realist and pragmatic. i.e. from - suffer here on earth and look to a better future in heaven. TO - we can make a difference in this life here and now. Even one of the top catholic archbishops in brazil was excommunicated by the Pope for 'straying' from official church dogma.

So, when a lady in Brazil asks if you are religious, it has nothing to do with following a strict set of rules and guidelines and more to do with being a better person. I read that Mahatma Ghandi once said that the most religious person he knew was an atheist Englishman. This was because the Englishman lived his life according to a set of rules based on unquestioned customs and tradition rather than personal conviction.
