The FARC announced today that they did shoot down the US spy plane several day ago and they are holding the 3 US contractors hostage.  President Bush has sent another 150 US troops to Colombia to help look for the Americans.

Steve,
I think we have been in this unofficially for some time, but mostly with advisors and equipment. It has an erie resemblence to early vietnam but FARC doesn't have the numbers or popular support of the Viet Cong. The jungle does make it harder to deal with them.
I have to agree with FARC on one thing, these guys really are
involved in the war with them and can be considered military combatants,so its not the same as the terrorism they are doing.Maybe they feel a little bolder since we have 2 big issues on our plate already. That would be a mistake.
Prediction. We will make quick work of Iraq, with most of the Iraqis just surrendering.Smoking out Saddam may be a little harder but I wouldn't give him a 50% chance of being alive in 3 months. All kinds of attrocities beyond those already known will come to light. It will have the opposite of a Vietnam effect, giving us more resolve to take on other problems, such as Korea and Colombian rebel terrorists.Nervious peaceniks and  countries like France are going to come off looking stupid.
Just my prediction,it could go another way,but I seriously doubt it.We do not need to be so afraid of taking action when its the right thing to do.We have the might and the right on our side.My biggest concern in Iraq is setting up a new government and getting out.
There has been a hang wringing 25 plus years after Vietnam with  fear to get involved. Our 9/11/01 wake up call shook us out of that.Tyrants and terrorist of the world are on the list, higher or lower,to deal with.Their days are numbered.

You can also draw inferences that big trouble is coming
by the recent comments from the Venezualan mini-Castro.
He said he is willing to break off relations with Colombia.
This would only be to protect his border from counter-in-
cursions from U.S.-trained Colombian forces chasing the
ELN and FARC, but forced to stop at the Venezualan border.

I think Bush wants the FARC to politicize the kidnapping
of the U.S. "advisors". It will justify further involvement
in the civil war, which he badly wants. I have no idea if
this will lead to a quagmire, but it is about to become a
"regional" conflict.
