I don't understand the logic of drawing the Americans
further into the country. Since this deal will be rejected
and have just that effect. They have lost control of the
countryside in many parts of the country, and therefore
have had to resort to urban bombings. More Americans means
greater electronic control of the country--satellites,
"sweeps" of the sky for cellular burst traffic, etc. What
do they hope to gain?

I don't know, I was thinking like you. Before they had been very careful to not 'wake the sleeping giant' (Yeah, they've been terrible, but only to other Colombians). Maybe they really are crazy. Last week, 95 out of 100 US citizens probably couldn't have pointed out Colombia on a world map, now everybody knows where it is. Or maybe their thinking (particularly after the demonstrations around the world a couple of weeks ago) is to say to all the peace-nicks "Yeah, and big mean Uncle Sam is doing it to our country too" and gain sympathy and support from Barbra Striesand (sp) and Jane Fonda and their buddies??

No way in hell will Uribe give them any land.
