Hmmm. I see a lot is said about stratas in Colombia. So is there any way to say what strata it is just by looking at it? I dont want to ask a girl directly about that but at the same time I became curious.

I think the "Do Colombian women ever marry up" thread made too much out of strata.  Simply put, strata is assigned by neighborhood and is used to determine billing rates for things like electricity, water, and telephone services.  My wife was born and rasied in Cali and she's not even certain what strata the neighborhood she came from is.  She also said that while some people may be selective about who they get involved with (e.g. professionals may prefer to date other educated people and rich people may stick to other rich families) they don't go around asking potential dates what strata they're from.

Strata will certainly be correlated with income level, but don't make the mistake of assuming that it's some official stratification of social classes.

The US has a similar system, but it's only two classes and separates the poor from the non-poor.  Someone might qualify for a lower telephone or power billing rate if their family income falls below a certain level.  All others pay a higher rate.  You don't see US people selecting dates based on their telephone service rates, but you will find some who aren't interested in going out with poor or uneducated people.  You might meet a woman who lives in a trailer park and has only a 10th grade education, and a history of living her life based on the advice of a 900 number psychic hotline.  Based on that, some will choose not to get involved with her.  They don't make that decision based on her telephone billing rate though.

No doubt there are people who select people to associate with based on neighborhood (and membership in social clubs, etc.) in Colombia, but my wife hasn't ever known anyone to comment on a person's "strata" as a reason to avoid them.

Patrick, you state "but my wife hasn't ever known anyone to comment on a person's "strata" as a reason to avoid them."

I have. I went on a date in Cali in December. Being a Gentleman I acompanied the lady home in a taxi. She wanted me to drop her off at a half way point and take another taxi but the taxi driver told her that changing taxis in the neighborhood we were in at that time at night was dangerous. So, we went to her house. The taxi driver was so scared he was shaking. After we dropped off my date I asked her what he thought about her. He said "es una mujer de modelaje. Por lo menos es una mujer medio-sana pero mire donde vive". Trhanslation: She is a model in apperance. She is probably a half decent person but look where she lives.

Of course there's class consciousness, but according to my wife, people aren't comparing stratas.  Strata is used to determine billing rates.  I think some people are expecting guys to walk up to a lady and ask her sign and strata in a bar.

I doubt too many people living in a strata 6 neighborhood are going to hang out with many people living in a strata 1 neighborhood.  I don't think you'll see the people in the strata 3 area putting down the people in the strata 1 or 2.

I think some people may be drawing the conclusion from the previous posts that there's some official social stratification in Colombia and everyone has a level.  There isn't.  Strata is simply a way of determining how much a person will pay for utilities.  It's based on what neighborhood they live in.  Of course it's related to income, but I think the immpression people are getting here is equivalent to a foreigner hearing about marginal federal tax brackets in the U.S. and assuming they determine social status.  To a degree they do, just as in Colombia lower strata neighborhoods are poorer.  Someone might prefer rich people, but they don't ask what their marginal federal tax rate is, and from what my wife says, they don't ask strata level in Colombia.  A woman here might see a guy who drives an s-class Mercedes and wears a Rolex watch and decide she wants to date him, but she doesn't ask what his marginal tax rate is to make the decision, she does it on perception.

I agree with you. It is in very poor taste in Colombia to talk about money or social level when meeting someone. Here in California when I meet single women that I may be interested in knowing they want to know what I am worth before even deciding if they want to have an ice cream with me. At a party once a women asked me if I was a medical doctor. I told her no. Then she told me she only wants to date a doctor.

You can have two different strata too. One for the phone and one for electric and water.
For example, my Phone is strata 6 and my water and electric is strata 4. Don't know how that works.
Si Lo Ve is like strata 1. Yup, get you throat cut up there.
Ciudad Jardin is Strata 6. El Ingenio is strata 5. Santa Monica and Versalles are strata 4. Bretana is strata 3. I am guessing, but I would say West of Guadalupe is strata 2.

If the taxi driver is afraid to take you to her house for fear of his life it is a low strata.
