There's been some mention before about drug-funded shopping malls and other real estate developments in Colombia.  I came across the link below that might be interesting to some of you.  The article is kind of long (and it's just the summary of a large study) but the main point is that in recent years the drug business has not been more than 2 or 3% of the total economy, down from 5-7% in the late 80's to early 90's. And the author has a sense of humor - he lists beauty queens as one of the articles of conspicuous consumption...

Hello David,

If your interested in the subject read "The Andean Cocaine Industry"  It deals with the impact on Colombia, Bolivia and Peru.  Very dry though.
