How long does it take to deliver reg mail to Colo out of the west coast? Is this reliable means of communication? Letters make it through?

Assuming "Colo" means Colombia (and not Colorado) I sent a letter to Colombia by regular mail last year and it never arrived.

I sent another package by International Express Mail to Colombia and it didn't arrive either.  I could've gotten my money back but I lost my receipt.

I did send one other by International Express mail with some notarized documents and it did arrive in about 1 week.

I never could bring myself to pay FedEx $25 to send a letter, but I bet that works.

I needed to send some copies to my fiancee and I just posted them on the Internet and she downloaded them.  Forget the post office.  But that only works with copies.

My wife sent 3 letters one time. She thought she was being clever and put some pesos between some pictures.2 of the envelopes arrived in Cali in about 3 weeks, without the money. The other never showed up.If you are sending something it won't hurt greatly to lose and if you can wait 3 weeks it will probably get there.
Anything important we send UPS for about $42.It gets there in 3 days.Even with UPS put no money in the envelope. I put $500 cash in a an envelope one time thinking UPS would be secure even though they warn you against sending money.Fortuately the documents in the envelope got there, the money did not.I called UPS and spoke to several people.Finaly a lady in Bogota said that Colombian customs opens everything and they most likely stole the money.
Also it does no good to send express US mail if it goes into the Colombian mail system when it hits Colombia.
Avianca(they have an 800 number) will ship a envelope out of Miami or Los Angeles for $10-$12 but you need to get it too them.I think it gets to Colombia in one or two days.
