For those who may be contemplating retirement in a Latin country, but would shy away from Colombia because of the instability, you might want to think about the location you search in.  It's greatly to your advantage to marry someone who's a resident of the country you would retire to in terms of both purchasing real estate and possibly opening a business.

I've discussed the possibilty of retiring to Latin America with my wife in the future, but she doesn't want to live in Mexico (my first choice) and neither of us would consider Colombia unless the situation improves dramaticaly. If we weren't trying for a child, I think we'd both agree on Colombia.  But with a child to consider, you have to take the possibility of kidnapping much more seriously.

So when is somebody going to get their butt down to Guayaquil Ecuador and give us a trip report?Huh

Patrick, while Boquete Panama is my second choice for a residence outside of the U.S. (and at the moment a place to escape the big city) I have not yet traveled to Ecuador but I do plan on a trip there later this year. If you have anything of special interest let me know and I’ll see what I can find out for you.

There's nothing in particular I want in the way of information.  I just want to see how guys do there because it was second only to Colombia in terms of response rates to our advertisments to the ladies.  I think there's a lot of interest among the ladies there, but few gringos visiting.  Sounds ideal to me for those who operate without using agencies.  If I were single and looking, I think I'd check it out myself.

i think colombia is the first choice because they have so many agencies. how many agencies are in panama?, and i doubt they have a population of 30 million like colombia. i myself would have gone to brazil or mexico before colombia, but me, like everyone else, i went to colombia because of the many agencies and the odds were better.

Your 100% correct about Panama! While Colombia still remains my first choice Panama is clean, modern, less pollution, uses U.S currency, electronic products cost less and best of all you can travel throughout the entire country by car without problems. Another thing great about Panama is taht obtaining a resident visa is easy and comes with a lot of benefits. I don’t care for the heat and humidly in much of the country, but Boquette Panama is located in the mountains with pretty much the same climate as Medellin, it's a great place to unwind and get away from the big city.

Boquette does sound interesting. I'm guessing the economy is kind of up there though. Any place that uses dollars kind of spooks me though Ecuador is (was) supposed to be cheaper than Colombia.
