First off, let me say that I've mostly been a lurker on the board for two years now, and if it wasn't for the information on this board, I don't know if I would have been successful. I was able to modify my thought process so I could make the right decisions and be able to clearly see any red flags in our developing relationship. I am now engaged to the most wonderful women I've ever known and happier than I've been in years.

I would also like to wish everyone a very happy new year and all the best for you and your loved one if you are blessed to have already met her. I also wish everyone the best of luck in your search.

After much research and discussion with my novia, we have decided to go the K1 visa route.

I have a couple of questions...first, does anyone know about how long the K1 visa process takes for Venezuela? Are there any particular problems in that country?

Also, can my novia's son get a visa to come with her at the same time?

Thanks,

Tim.

should be the same as colombia,(three to six months), or any other south american country, unless the american embassy closes down, due to the mess in venezuela. her son can get a k2 visa with her. let me know if you need help with the paperwork. i have a friend who charges $200 to do a k1. the K1 is a better way to go than the spousal visa.

... in response to k1 better than the spousal visa, posted by mudd on Jan 9, 2003

How is it better?  It allows you to "try on" the other person for 3 months without a permanent commitment.  But it is truly "better"?  That is relative to the person.  For my fiancee who is a professional who owns and runs her own business, selling her business so she can come to the states and try a relationship, meanwhile not having a business to come back to and not being able to contribute support to her parents during this period, is not a "better" option.  Getting married with just herself and her fiancee in attendance in front of a justice of the peace in the United States (which is how it would be if we married under a K1 since I don't don't have any family or friends) instead of in front of her family and friends in Colombia is not "better".  Being a Catholic and living with a man she is not married to, is not "better" (at least to her, I am not judging other people's choices on this matter, I just am speaking how my fiancee would feel about it).

I know you are referring to "better" in the sense that there is no commitment and I agree that in that sense it is better. But the choice of visa can not just be weighed in terms of commitment or no commitment but in how it affects the total overall situation for two people.

for most people it is a better visa. most men dont have the option to travel every few weeks as yourself, so it is impossible to really know the girl before she is here. on another point, what makes you think that if she gets married in her country, she will come here and adjust to our life style, climate, food, social surroundings, spending habbits ect, or worse yet, be faithful, and since you just signed the afidavite of support, your stuck and good luck getting a divorced done in her counrty. im not trying to bag on you or anybody else, but most men have no idea what they are doing, and  "most" men dont  really know the women without liveing with her for a while.there also should  be some kind of commitment from the man, if the women has to quit her job, and it doesnt work out in the 90 days, he should give her money until she finds a good job back in her country.seems fair to me.

Do you mind telling us how you found your lady in Venezuela.  Did you purchase an address?  Went to an agency?  Or did you just hopped a plane and go down there?
Thanks,  Mark

Don't know about the V. timeframe (don't think it would take any longer than Col., but who knows?), but if her son is under 21 he can get a visa (K2)as her dependent....be sure to list him on the I-129F form.
