support obligation

It is my understanding that if you marry a foreign lady and she divorces you, you could end up paying for her to live in the US for a long time.
Does the law, which requires this pertain to both those who came on fiance visa and married in the US, as well as those who were married overseas and then came to the US.

My understanding:

The I-134 is binding for 3 years. The I-864 Affidavit of Support became effective in 1997 and must be filed with the spousal visa or when the fiancée status is adjusted after marriage.

I-864 fact: “The Affidavit of Support is enforceable against the sponsor until the immigrant becomes a U.S. citizen, can be credited with 40 quarters of work, leaves the United States permanently, or dies.”

When I got married in 1996 in the Pi it was 3 years. Unless it changed and I never heard about it.  Aff of support 3 years. If it were 10 years you can bet your arse my Ex would have me paying!  Humabdos

Yes. The legal obligation extends until they become a citizen or are credited with 40 quarters of work (10 years).

Its for three years only not ten and thats only guarantees she won't be on public support.
