Sorry I missed your post below.
I did not have a problem with pickpockets but then again I spent most of my time in Davao the first trip. I bought a necklace pouch and kept my most important papers (visa, return ticket, ID, some money, etc.) in it. Everthing else I gave to Honey. 2 Reasons...1) to see how she would deal with having all that money in her pocession ($4K)and 2) she'd know how to keep it safe. Note: I only gave her the money after I was sure she was the right girl.
There are situations everywhere in the world but I really didn't notice anything specific to be aware of. Honey was constantly trying to "protect me". Telling me not to go anywhere without her but I did anyway and had not one single incident. I guess the closest I came to a problem was the taxi drivers who didn't want to start their meters. I'd insist or I'd get out and get another cab. I had Honey teaching me certain words from the time I got there (turn right, turn left, etc.) so I could direct the cab drivers to the places I wanted to go. I picked up others words from listening and asking questions. She was really surprised when I picked "maganda" (pretty) and "ganda, ganda ma" (very, very pretty) from the radio.
I wouldn't listen to many remarks about "beware of this and beware of that". The R.P. is a 3rd world country with strong American leanings. They in general like Americans and we are treated very well as long as you're staying on the beaten path. You'll even hear Filipinas saying theings like "perfect" and "gwapo" reguardless of what you think of yourself. Watch for eyebrow movements - thats a language in itself. Raised eyebrows I took as a "Hi" or "I agree".
