She wants to be able to show her friends she has a kano penpal.Doesn't sound like anything sinister just some good old fashioned showing off.

I, myself, had rather receive and write a letter using the good ole US Post office, than by e-mail.  To me, it indicates that the person is more sincere and has taken the time and thought to send and write a letter, rather than send an e-mail
