Has anyone shipped boxes to the Philippines very recently?
LBC has boosted their rates...are there any other good companies
 with good deals out there?

Thanks,

I am checking out Forexworld...a few people are pointing that direction. By the way, do you know of any good shippers
going the other way, Philippines to the USA??? LBC for example
does not go the other direction.
Right now I am an Oregon/Arizona boy by way of...well, a bunch of places outside the US too.

   Take care,

Nathan

Going the other way is like paddling upriver with teaspoon. I looked extensively into this two years ago, when I was trying to import handcrafts from Cebu to the states.

The choices came down to UPS, Fedex, and Aboitiz. All were roughly the same price. UPS seemed to have the best value and record, promising 4-6 days.

Cost for a 2X2X2 box weighing in at a whopping 20 pounds worked out to be roughly $220 US. Fedex was around $250. Don't remeber what Aboitiz wanted, but it was pretty close to Fedex.

I was born and raised in the Newport area, and have spent quite a bit of time around Yuma. Go figure.

Are there any surface shippers who have 4-6 week service for not such crazy prices?

Nathan,

These guys will do Balikbayan Boxes from PI to USA. There are a lot of restrictions however. I think there is a 10-box minimum, $99/box (Manila to Long Beach), $150 Customs Broker fee, $200 forklift fee, etc.  What’s that, about $134/box if you have 10 boxes. And that’s for personal goods and household effects. They will also handle commercial shipments.

I haven’t seen anything cheaper yet. I heard that Northwest Airlines will ship excess baggage for $169 per 70# box (?).

That's the first I've heard of that reverse bal box thing. Not a bad deal considering the alternatives, or rather, the LACK of alternatives.

What are the current rates at LBC Nathan? We shipped a Balikbayan Box via LBC last August to Mindanao for $75. Last year near Christmas I think it was $90. They usually raise their rates near the end of the year when everyone seems to be shipping and then lower them later when the demand slacks off.

There is a lot of competition here in San Diego and a lot of companies are running specials all the time, especially in the off season. I know one company even throws in a free sack of rice with the delivery if you send 2 boxes.

Yes, I was getting really good rates for a while, now LBC Portland to Mindanao is $125 for a 20x20x24 box...the rate has doubled since I last shipped.

That is a big increase! I’m not sure about LBC, but the other freight forwarders down here in So Cal are still advertising low prices. Recent examples:

ALAS Cargo: $60 to Mindanao

Peninsula Cargo: $70 to Visayas/Midanao (w/4th box free)

Champion Cargo: $55 anywhere PI (except Mindanao???)

Aloha Cargo Express: $65 Visayas/Mindanao

BTW, I’ve also noticed that some of the larger shippers haven’t been listing their rates in their newspaper ads recently.
