Surigao

Hello everyone, I would like to thank all of you who provided feedback on my earlier question about connecting flights in and out of Manila. I adjusted my flights accordingly. I will be visiting Surigao City Feb 25 through Mar 4. If anyone has any input on places to visit\see and a hotel to stay in I would appreciate it. Thank you

Just like Ray and Surigao said, the  best hotel there is
in Surigao City is Gateway Hotel so far.
But if you wanna see more of Surigao, you might try as
well to visit some islands there(nice white sand beach), that is if you like
beaches.

Surigao City is a cute small town, you could actually walk
the whole city in one day. he..he.. just kidding..
Actually just a little info, but I did walk the whole town
back then during our parades.

How I miss Surigao so much.......

Are you from Surigao Del Norte Esiang?

My wife is from Dinagat Island near San Jose and she was living in Surigao City when I met her. You’re right about the fresh sea food! My wife’s family has a large fish trap and I ate fresh fish for breakfast, lunch, and dinner while I was staying on the Island. Do you like the black sea urchins? I couldn’t eat them little boogers while they were still alive :-)

     Yes, I originally came from Surigao City, my
beloved hometown.After 12 years of my life I joined my
sisters in Quezon City leaving our Mother Dear alone,
she has to take care of her little business (a boarding house) and her work at a public school.
     I see your wife is from Dinagat Island, My sister
in Law is also from Dinagat. Her family name is Ga,
maybe your wife might have heard of Ga's family, I bet
their quite known there, I'm not so sure really....
     About black sea urchins, Oh! I like it so
much when it's fresh and just pour a vinegar on it....Wow!
     I missed all the seafoods there,fresh and inexpensive
compare here not even so fresh and yet so expensive....
     No wonder people here love's to eat meat( my husband
is one of them) joking.....I kind'a get used to it.....
     
     Oh! Regards to your wife from her kababayan of

Yes, my wife said she has many cousins named “Ga” from Magsaysay & Dinagat town on Dinagat Island. So I guess by Filipino standards that makes us cousins? I think Surigao Ken & I are brothers now (Yikes!).

She said that “Go” is also a common name in Surigao, and that she new of a Pedro Ga Go (LOL).

Yes, the seafood is expensive here in the States and not as fresh as you can get back home in Surigao. But we have a lot of Filipino and Asian supermarkets here in San Diego that have ‘fairly fresh’ fish at a reasonable price. Bangus $.99/lb, Tilapia $.69/lb, Dalagang Bukid $2.99/lb, Lapulapu $2.99/lb, Salmon $.99/lb, live blue crabs $2.99/lb, Yellowtail $1.99/lb, Albacore Tuna $2.00/lb, etc., but no fresh dilis, only dried. The wife said the fish here is not as fresh as back home but “it’s better than nothing” :-).

Sure I know Pedro Ga Go (he...he..)
        Too bad, we dont live in San Diego,
I've already tried to look around here if there is an
Asian market, there's none. I think the closest we
can get fresh fish here is in Maryland but it takes us
1 1/2 hr. driving just to get there.
        We sometimes went to some seafoods restaurants there,the ones near by the sea and it's real real nice and
tasty fresh foods they have.
         
        I have a strong feeling that your wife and
my sister in law are indeed cousins maybe a distant relative. Her family also runs a fishing business, she is the daughter of Mr. Eming Ga (being known as Eming),I think their from Dinagat town. My sister in law name is
Ma. Fe Ga (nickname Piyay).
       
        Let me know if your wife kind'a heard of
this Ga family and if they're really cousins.....

Hey Ray,

Not a bad thing! Surigao Ken always has a lot of good food and drink around. Just get the heck out of the way when he starts shooting his guns. LOL Before you go hunting together, you might want to check if he has any of his old hunting partners heads mounted on the wall. =8oO

Hey,

The suites at the Gateway Hotel are about 45 dollars a night. If you like a little room to stretch out in plus if you plan to have any guests over thats the only way.

In Surigao they have a Greenwich Pizza and a Jollibee hamburger place if you need a dose of Western food.

Like Ray said, by far the best place to eat is Adrianos by the Sea. If you hit it off with your girl be expected to pay for a family dinner there.

By far the best place to stay in Surigao City is the Philippine Gateway Hotel, (086) 826-1283. Rooms should be under $20 and I would recommend a reservation for at least the first couple of nights. The Gateway also has a nice little night club and one of the best restaurants in town. Be sure and order a big bowl of corn & crab chowder!

Other good places to eat in Surigao: Adriano's by the Sea & Ling Wan Lumpia House.
