... in response to If you check the archives..., posted by Bear on Jul 20, 2002

Yes, I saw your post.  For the past year I've been running OnTrack firewall and Cookiepal but I liked IE so I didn't switch.  But when I saw that site and then saw that ALL my emails were being saved, that was it, no more Outlook Express and IE.  Six months ago I started using Ad Aware, Popup Stopper and a HOSTS file to fake out the ad sites.

Thanks for the info on Real Player/AOL.  I just installed Netscape but now that I see all the AOL stuff in there I'm thinking about going to Opera like Jeff.

Netscape still offers their pre AOL software (Netscape Navigator 4.X) that doesn't have all that nonsense. I use it for mail especially.

... in response to HOSTS file?, posted by Bear on Jul 21, 2002

Bear,

It's a text file in the C:\Windows directory with a list of server names and addresses that are supposed to be found on your system.  But if you put a bunch of ad server names in there (doubleclick, adsmart, etc.)all mapped to your IP address, then these sites are effectively blocked.  The system will look for these ad servers locally (and quickly) and not find them, instead of asking your ISP to find them.

I downloaded a hosts file that already had a bunch of these ad servers in there.  It's probably time for me to download a  more up-to-date one.  I'll look around and let you know.

Hi Dave,

Spent all day tuning up my system.  Tomorrow I'll have to make it up to the wife and take her out for lobster and steamers!

Do they have clams in the PI? I'm guessing they have what the Japanese call Asari and what is called here "Manila Clams" here: smaller ridged shelled, multi colored clams. They're not nearly as good as the Eastern littlenecks and "piss" clams you have up there. I sure miss them. Had some FedExed in from Maine last year along with a couple of live lobsters! It was a C-Note but worth it!

The morning market in Cagayan De Oro has numerous vendors of fresh steamer clams...usually about P35 a kilo

Sally loves them but I don't know if they have an abundance of little clams in the PI or not.  All I've seen are the giant clams while diving, about 18 inches wide!

The kind like in the old movies with the deeply scallopped shells that the hero always seems to get his foot caught in?

..like in the cartoons too -LOL!  But these big ones are so camouflaged with all the stuff growing on them that they're real hard to spot.  It's the long, regular deeply scallopped mouth that gives them away.

Can you eat them? It would bring new meaning to the term "a bucket of steamers!"
