Hey everyone!

Got other question. So what kind of rice do you buy? I've tried many types; Jasmine, China Doll, blah, blah. Just wondering.

Just trying to make my lady happy,
Take care,

Tes really turns her nose up at this American rice stuff.

We buy Jasmine Thai rice.

I like it very well.  I eat rice a couple of time a day.  It's not bad.

Hi Surigao Ken!

How's that bun in the oven coming along?

Rice, another good topic for the forum (LOL). I make my own "blend". I mix 2 parts of premium Cal-Rose with 1 part of good Texas Long Grain in my rice dispenser. I've had a lot of compliments from Filipinas over the years who told me that my rice is better than theirs (ROFL). Anyway, the wife thinks it's great and she's always smiling while she's eating it, especially while she is eating with her hands (kamayan). This mixture also seems to have the perfect consistency for fried rice, one of my all-time favorites.

We also buy Thai jasmine rice and she cooks that occasionally. I call it "stink rice" because of the aroma. Jasmine rice can be a little overpowering at times but it goes well with certain kinds of foods (like fried dried dilis) and the wife cooks the jasmine once a week or so.

It sounds like you’re on the right track though. Just keep experimenting until you find the one that makes your wife smile when she eats it and then you have it made in the shade. Oh yeah, Dave is right. If you don’t have a decent rice cooker, get one. Even us amateurs can make perfect rice every time with a rice cooker :-) A decent rice cooker can be found for around $30 in Costco. Or you can pay a couple hundred smackers for a fancy one that does the same thing.

Also, a 50 lb rice dispenser is well worth the $40-50 it will set you back. It keeps the rats and bugs out and does the measuring for you.

Ray

P.S. Uncle Ben’s is for dorks :-)

Hey Ray,

I really like your idea of a rice blend. I going to give it a try. Personally, I can only tell the difference in taste between fried rice and white rice, but my wife can. Shocked)) I thought that my ex's family (Cuban) ate a lot of rice (twice a day). But I found out that's nothing! LOL After 18 years, the Cubans got me up to eating rice once or twice a week. In only 10 months, I'm now up to 4-5 times a week. We have a 25 lb rice dispenser that sits on the counter. It was worth every peso I paid for it. We may have to get a bigger one. LOL My wife had a 50 lb rice dispenser at home in the Philippines.

We have a good quality, K.I.S.S. (for those who don't know- keep it simple stupid) rice cooker. It has a switch that clicks from cook to warm automatically when the rice is done...hard to mess it up. Some of those rice cookers look like you would need a computer science degree to program them. 8oO I recommend those with a no-stick cooking pot...rice makes very good glue! I gave my old one without a no-stick surface to my ex-mother-in-law. Shocked))) Actually...she really likes it.

Hey Bamboo,

Uncle Ben's...your more of a gourmet than me! LOL I was eating Success rice in the boiling bags before my wife got here. ;o)))

A lot of Filipinas seem to like Minute Rice, my sister-in-law for one. I see that Mahatma is now selling Thai Jasmine rice (2 and 5 pound bags) in supermarkets. It's still cheaper in an Asian market, even for best the quality.

I used to buy rice down at the Asian market It had an elephant on the front of the bag I think it's called Melagrousa? (sp) Sarap sarap kaayo! I must have bamboo shoots in my rice with garlic.

Hey Bamboo,

Good stuff!I have a couple of empty 25 lb Royal Elephant Jasmine rice bags that I use for book bags. Milagrosa is a Philippine grown aromatic rice. Many of the Thai Jasmine rice bags also have "Milagrosa" printed on them. But I think that they are really a Jasmine (aromatic) rice and not a true Milagrosa.

Hi Ken,

We buy 25 pound bags of the best premium quality Jasmine rice, imported from Thailand. We purchase it from a busy Asian market where the inventory turnover good. We cook it in a Tiger electric rice cooker, so even I can make perfect rice every time. My wife enjoys both the taste and convenience of the combination.

Hi Dave,

Thai Jasmine here too, from the Cambodian market.  Sally likes it and for me it's not bad.  My original rule was "rice only once a day for me" and I'm still under that.  She makes an excellent mashed potato so that's the moderating factor.

Hi Jim,

I'm with you on your "rice only once a day rule!" Shocked)) More than that and I have a hard time eating and swallowing it. I look like a chipmunk with puffy cheeks. :oO I usually eat rice with some kind of sauce. Potatoes...now you're talkin'!

Yes! - that's the key, plenty of sauce to give it flavor and slide it down.  Chicken Curry w/rice, extra sauce; Sweet and Sour Pork w/rice, extra sauce.

Before I discovered the sauce trick I was thinking about getting a rice-eating dog and using the old dog-under-the-table trick Shocked))
