... in response to It worked for me..., posted by Dave H on Jun 13, 2002I meant to say "I wish my fiancee (wife) could have come to the US 'AS' a tourist before we married.
My wife has found that none of her family (except one sister who lives in US) or friends in the Philippines can relate to what life is really like in America. My wife works much harder in the US (hospital), having to do most of the things that the patient's family normally would do in the Philippines (feeding, bathing, changing bedding, etc.). There are also fewer workers to help and often finds herself having to roll and move 200+ pound patients alone. They can't conceive that having a car is not a luxury in most parts of the US, that jeepneys and tricycles are not everywhere to be found, slower traffic is supposed to keep to the right, a small bag of Chippy in the US would cost a half days pay in the Philippines, ten people can eat at McDonalds in the Philippines for what it costs two or three in the US and you're supposed to throw away your own garbage here, most clothing and shoes sold in the US are made somewhere in Asia, that a single balikbayan box can cost over $100 in extra baggage fees, pennies are only good for ballast (good for drowning), government here is staffed by the same type of inefficient lazy bureaucrats...except bribes cost a whole lot more, not everyone in the US loves Bill Clinton...especially Hillary, Jimmy Carter is not "Wonder Woman" Linda Carter's father, squatters here are not allowed to block our view of the dump, people who dump garbage illegally can receive large fines, people who take garbage and trash can be arrested for stealing and also receive large fines...
