Ladies and gentlemen, I want to say that I love my husband dearly, but he has absolutely the strangest taste in music of anyone I have ever heard of. Even worse than his eating habits when on his own. I thought I would post this so you could get a glimpse into my man's life.

He has all his music on MP3s he has burned from his own albums and he puts several disks in the player that plays mp3s and he puts it on random play. Here is a sampling of what he listened to the other day (it was rainy and he stayed in and did things in his den like clean guns and paperwork all day). I was in my office and could hear it and wrote them down out of curiosity. I later asked him about the names of the songs and their artists. I have tried to get the names of the songs and the artists correct. I had to guess at spelling for some as I don't like to ask him how to spell something. Here they are, in the order they came on his machine.

Tequila.. Champs (a one-word song)
Ride of the Valkyries...Wagner
Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport..Rolph Harris
Margaritaville..James Buffet
The Entire Abbey Road Album.. Beatles
Dust in the Wind.. Kansas
Dirty Diana.. Michael Jackson
Snoopy v. The Red Baron.. The Royal Guardsmen (this is cute)
Welcome to My Nightmare.. Alice Cooper (?)
Total Eclipse of the Heart.. Bonny Tyler (I like this one)
Rio.. Duran Duran
Kung Fu Fighting..Carl Douglas
Levon.. Elton John
Put the Lime in the Coconut.. Harry Nillson
Me and Bobby McGee.. Janis Joplin
The Mighty Quinn..Manfred Man
One Night in Bangkok.. Murry Head
Beep Beep.. Playmates (this is cute too)
Land Down Under.. Men Who Work
Rocket Man.. Elton John
My Sweet Lord.. George Harrison
Layla..Cream
Camp Grenada..Spike lee (I think it is supposed to be funny)
Little Red Corvette.. Prince
I Want to to Rock and Roll All Night and Party Every Day.. KISS
Peanuts Theme.. Henri Mancini
Logical Song..Super Tramp
Key Largo.. Bertie Higgins (I like this one too)
Turn the Page..Bob Seeger
Rock the Casbah.. Clash
Colorado Kool-Aid..John Paycheck (not a nice song)
Moon River.. Henri Mancini (very nice)
Pink Panther theme.. Henri Mancini (again nice)
Power of Love.. Huey Lewis
Great Ba**s of Fire.. Jerry Lee Lewis
Samba Pa Ti .. Sand-tana
Jupiter's Child.. by I think Step-on-Wolf
I Can't Drive 55..Sam Hagar (this sounds like Don)
Stand By Your Man..Tammy Winette
Knock 3 Times..Tony Orlando and Dawn (nice)
Sweet Cherry Pie..Warrant (not a nice song)
Were-wolves of London..Warren Zevon (not a nice song)
A Dog Barking Jungle Bells..unk (he thinks this is hilarious and I like it too)
Sharp Dressed Man..ZZ Topp
Godzilla..Blue Oyster Cult (??!!)
Stroking..Clarence Carter (not a nice song)
Proud Mary..CCR (?)
Mellow Yellow..Donovan
Spill the Wine.. War (a semi not nice song)
Wichita Lineman..Glen Campbell (I like)
Smuggler's Blues..Glen Frey
Treetop Flyer..unk
In A Gada Da Vida (?) Iron Butterfly (very long)
Jack and Diane..John Mellenkamp
Doctor Heckle and Mister Jive (?).. Men Who Work
Jungle Boogie..Cool and the Gang (?)
Hair of the Dog.. Nazareth (not a nice song)
Cinnamon Girl.. Neil Young (this one grows on you)
Bat Out of He**..Meat Loaf (?) (Not a nice song)
Bertha B**t Boogie..Jim Castor (huh?)
Heart of Glass..Blondie
Itsee Bitsee Teenee Weensee Yellow Polkadot Bikini..Neal Sedaka (cute but strange)
Polk Salad Annie..Tony Joe White (I did not understand this at all)
Ten Little Bottles..Roger Miller
Lady Marmalade..Pattie Labelle
The Meistersingers of Nuremburg (Mozart)
Montego Bay..unk (this one grows on you too)
I Eat Cannibals..unk (another strange song)
Chevy Van..Sammy Johns
Sweet City Woman..Stampeders
The Lion Sleeps Tonight.. Tokens (I have always liked this song and it is one of Don's favorites)
Mad-man Across the Water.. Elton John
The Marine Corps Song.. The Marine Band
Monster mash..Boris Picket (cute)
Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road..London Wainright (I am totally confused by this song)
Baba O Reilly..The Who
Tales of Brave Ulysses..Cream
Purple People Eater..Shemp Wolley (another one I do not understand)
Eye of the Tiger..Survivor
What's New Pu**y-cat..Tom Jones
Convoy..CW McCall (also confusing)
Some of his Tribal Chants
Thick as a Brick..Jethro Tull (nice flute)
Some song in German about 99 luff-balloons, he speaks German I do not
American Pie..Don McClain (I like this song a lot)
Little Red Riding Hood..Sam the Sham and the Pharoes
Ghost Riders in the Sky..Sons of Pioneers
I'd Rather Hear a Fat Girl F*rt Than a Pretty Boy Sing..Pinker and Bowdone (not too nice but cute)

Now you tell me just what he has been listening to all his life? Some of those I recognize like Elton John and the classical music and Tom Jones and others. But a lot of this I have never heard until I came to this house. For many of them I think I have gotten the title or artist wrong and some of them are rather naughty or violent, and some are so strange I just do not understand them.

So you Asian ladies, don't try to understand the men's taste in music. Just laugh when they laugh and if they are happy, so much the better. Every time "Dance With Me" comes on he grabs me and starts dancing in the house which is nice. He is very strong and it feels good to be in his arms as he swings me around. He will listen to romantic songs and funny songs and sad songs and heavy medal songs with equal gusto. Mrs. Mayor says than men never grow up and just humor them. That sounds like good advice to me.

-VICKY

PS: Patrick the language monitor here needs work if I can't post pu**ycat. I tried about 20 times to get it to take the letter until Don finally told me which word was probably causing the problem.

Peaches

I  must  confess  that  the  one  thing  that is  making  me  cringe  about  geting  involved  with  an  Asian  woman  is  the  strong  possibility  of  having  to  do  Kareoke  with  her.

I will be willing to try  to  do the  Tennesee Two Step,  the  Charlston  or  even  the  funky chicken  with  her now  and  then.  I  am not embarrassed  about  making  an  Arse  out of myself  doing  that.  Heck I  did  that on  friday when  the  two  Japanese  girls  I  was  with  were  laughing  at how  I  ate  the  Korean  dinner  with my  chopsticks  but  I  completed  the  task ha ha ha.

But sitting  around and  howling  like  a  dog  in  heat  into   a  microphone  singing  the  Carpenters  and other bad  songs  fron  the  60's  70's  and  80's   is  crossing  the  line of  decency  for  me.  I  won't  be  held  accountable  if  I  break  the  machine  if  Debbie  Boones  YOU LIGHT UP MY  LIFE  comes  on  either.

Though  I  am  Dutch / American  and  hopefully not  quite  a  tight  wound  W.A.S.P.    I think I  am  on  your  husbands  side that  singing  should  only  be  done  in the  Shower,  your  Car,  or  when  no  one  else  is  around  If  you  are  not  confident  in  your  singing  abilities.   So  it  most  likely  is not  your singing  you have  to  worry  about ha ha ha.

I  will say this much about  the  Mexicans  that I work with.  Almost all  of  them  are  unabashed  about belting out a  few lines  of a  love  ballad at  work   every  now  and  then  sometimes  quite  loud  and  with  a lot  of  passion  too.

That way when you sound like two tomcats fighting over a fish head in an alley - no one else has to put up with the racket - except your sweetie and you. And try out some baritone songs - like Elvis or Frank Sinatra "Since my baby left me, I found a new place to dwell..."

Jeff

Well I  am  still  looking  for  the  Asian  sweetie part of  the  Kareoke equation  first  and  foremost  so we'll take it  one  step  at  a  time ha ha ha.  I'm waiting  for  a  girl named yuko's  letter  from  Fukuoka with  her  picture.  she said today that she received my  letter that  I  sent  5 - 6  days  ago.  Today  I also connected  with  a  girl  living  in Kobe who  has served  time  in Seattle  and  Toronto recently.

I  got  together with  my  friend  Masami  on  friday  and she  introduced  me  to her friend Emiko who is  5  foot  9 inches. I  was somewhat interested in  her and I  got  her  e-mail  address but  I  think  she  is  more  concerned about is  moving  to  San Jose to  start  her  nursing  degree than  long  distance friendships  at  the  moment.   We  went to  the  Japan  tourism bureau  downtown and picked up around 30 brocheures.  Masami  is  returning  to Tokyo  to  work for  a couple  of  months   but she  said  she  would  warn  her  friends  in Kanazawa and  maybe  tokyo that   I  was  coming  ha ha ha.  She said she  would  get  some information for  me  also.  She  is  such  a nice  and  thoughtfull  girl towards me  but  not  looking  for  a  relationship  either.  My  coworker  is  also  going  in  September with her  family  to celebrate  her  grandfathers  90 th  bithday so  she  will  have  info  for  me.

I  think/ hope I  am  getting close  to  the  halfway  point  with  $ 1500  saved  so  far.  I'm   targeting  Jan  or  Feb  for a  3  week  visit.  I hope  to  scam  up  to  5 free nights  in  the  Four  Seasons  Tokyo  property  and  I  have  a  fairly  solid  invitation  in  Osaka from my  friend whose  English  club's  papers  I  correct.  he  might  show  me  around  Kyoto  and  Nara.

What  do  you  think  I'll need  for  3  weeks  is  my  target  of $3500 - 4000 realistic?  Any  info  on  whether the Green  class Japan  rail  pass is  worth it for  someone  my size  at  $ 470  for 2  weeks  or  should I  go  for  the  ordinary  class  at  $ 350?  My  trip is still  over  6  months  away  though.  I will have  to  deal  with  my  Vegas  trip in july.  For  my  sugar  sculpting classes  to manipulate  sugar.  But Preperation  is  paramount  I  think.  Especially  since I will  be  a  fish  (who  can't  eat  fish)  out  of  water!

In  regards  to  a  Kareoke  Box  are  you  referring  to the  Kareoke  rooms that  they  have  in   the  parlors  for  only  a  small  bunch of  people  where  you all get  drunk  and  sing  together in private?   Or  are  you  referring  to  the home  units?  My  caucasian  friend Sharon got  one  of  those  and  was  demonstrating  it  for  me.  But  I  had  to  try  to  be  on  my  best  behavior  and  act  like I  was  interested.  Fortunately  I  said  I  was  hungry  and  we  went  out  to  get  something  to  eat ...  worked  like  a  charm ha ha ha ha.

Elvis  Costello  Via  Kareoke  might be  interesting though.

imput  from  anyone  is  welcome.

Yes, the little parlors you rent by the hour and get drunk and make a fool of yourself not the home units. They're a hoot and holler.

As for Japen, $3-4K should be no problem these days. Ten years ago I'd have said it would be pretty tight, but these days there's been lots of deflation in Japan so things are starting to get cheep again. Try to stay in Ryokans if you can - old fashioned Japanese inns that include breakfast and dinner. You'll have to write ahead and make sure they have something for you to eat. It might be tough to find food - they tend to put fish in everything. Even miso soup is made of katsuo dashi (skipjack tuna broth) as is Udon and Soba (noodles) soup stock. It'll be cold and your best bet may be ramen - warm, hearty, filling and inexpensive. Y500-750 ($4.5-7.00) ought to do it for a big steaming bowl of noodles with a hard boiled egg, spinach, green onions, and cha shu (BBQ pork.)

As for kansai - forget Kyoto. Every Japanese will tell you how wonderful the city is but every time I was there (6 or Cool it was disappointing and WAY overpriced. Do see Nara, though, It's worth the trip and Osaka is a great city. I'd head off across the island to the Japan sea coast also if you can swing it. The shinkansen doesn't go there but the local JR trains do so you can use your pass. Kanazawa is a fascinating old city and you get to travel next to Lake Biwa and through the Japanese alps. Himeji is another great city just south of Kobe. It has the castle where they filmed "Shogun." If you decide to go there let me know first. My friend's wife has a ryokan there - he always laughs that no one ever stays there, but it's a family hand-me-down as most are. Cool old place.

The decision to get a green card pass or not is a tough one. In the green cars is mostly stodgy old businessmen reading newspapers, wheil the regular cars will have more young and fun people - but the seats are somewhat tighter, though there's enough room for guys our size (bigger than airline coach seats) These days, I like the room of the green cars and travel with my wife, but if I were single and looking to make friends, I'd sit in the regular reserved sections.

Remember Bob S will be there teaching Enlish when you get there. I'm sure he'll have an extra futon and few square feet of tatami for a fellow P/L-er.

Jeff

As  always  thanks  for  the  Info.  I printed  it  up  for  future  reference.

No  I  was  unaware that  Bob S.  is  going  to  be  teaching  English  there, any idea where?

I  was  going  to  analyze/ do  research into  the Pastry  market while I  was  there  and  I  also  was  going  to  look into Teaching  English  outside  of  Tokyo.  Ive  read  that  they  have  to  pay  you  at  least  225,000 yen / $1730  a  month and  give  you  room at  least  by  law. It's  in  the  same  ballpark  as  what  I  am  making here in  Santa Barbara with our high  cost  of  living.  So I  would  be  a  fool  not  to  consider it  as  an  option.  However  the  girls  tell  me  that Japan  is  not  doing  so  great these  days  so  it  might  be  hard  to find something  anywhere.

I understand  that  they  want  a  bachelors degree  in almost  anything to  teach,  with  an  English degree being  preferred of  course.   But they  will also take  you  with  any degree even  if  you  majored  in  18 th  century French  mimes (they  survived  the  Guillitine  by  keeping  their mouths  shut ---  though  a  few lost  their  hands  here  and  there  ha ha ha) or  Basket weaving  (don't  laugh  I  have  met  fine  art  students  before  who  were  majoring  in basket weaving).

My problem  is  that  I  have  5  years of  college  but  only  2  associates  and  1  certificate.  However  I  am  willing  to bet  that  my  command  of English  might  be  better  than many 4 year College  graduates  now  a  days.  I  can  thank my  high  school  for  that --- Can  you  believe  it !

Last night I  recorded  "Ghost  actress"  and  I  just  finished recording  "Postman  Blues".  and  right  now  I  am  recording  "Heaven  and  Earth" in  the  other  room  about  the  16  th  century shoguns.  Gotta  love  that  Sundance  Channel with their exposure  to  Japanese  and  other Asian  movies.  It  sure  is nice seeing  other movies  made  from  a  new perspective with  a  different  feel  than  the  old  Hollywood  Formula  that  we  are  force  fed.  This  might be  sacreligious to  say  being that I  am  so  close  to  LA --- Where  Hollywood  is  considered a  real  industry and makes  the  front headline  and  business  sections  and  not  just  listed  in  the  entertainment section  like  everywhere  else in  the  country though.

I  would  like  to  try  to  do  a  get  together  once  again  but  with  my  out  of  control unpredictable schedule it  might  be  rough.  Who  knows  when I  will  get  another weekend  day  off  it  has  already  been  2 - 3  month  without  one.

Bob has a masters in engineering and didn't seem to have any trouble finding a job. Your money goes a lot farther now than it did so while they tell you things are tough in Japan, there is still the same opportunities for gaigin - except your pay goes a lot farther. Here's a good reference if you're looking for a job there:

http://www.jobsinjapan.com/

Love to see you if you get in the area, Eric. Maybe I'll head up to SB for a weekend at "El Pollo del Mar" (Ever see LA Story, the movie? It's hilarious.) Usually stay at Fess Parker's resort but wasn't overly satisfied last time.

... You guys can keep the dogs barking jingle bells. Makes me want to ralph.

Along with Wagner, Grieg's "Hall of the Mountain Queen" goes so well, too. Here's a funny one,, back in '67 or '68 I remember going to high school parties that the only record they played was "Inna Godda da Vida" - the same side of the albnum over and over again. At the time it was the hottest thing going!

My wife is also, always astounded at how I can switch from classic rock to smooth jazz to hardcore classical, all without a problem, while all her music is so similar - jazz, and soft modern classical (like Yo Yo Ma or orchestral tangos)

Convoy is a song based on rebelling against the law. Ask your hubby to rent the movie it starts with a woman in a convertible in the begginning he he. Also you should get him to play "Fox on the run" so he can chase you around the house, I forgot who the band is?

Oh he has most of those as well. He does not watch a lot of television. He reads and listens to music a lot or watches movie. In fact he has over two thousand albums of all sorts in all formats, including old 78 records that have to have a special player. He has about half of them transferred to MP3. He also has a very large collection of singles on 45 and tape. I merely scratched the surface for one day's play as an example. He will listen to classical, hard rock, "acid" rock (I cannot tell the difference), heavy medal, hipp-hopp, old country music (he despises Garth Brooks and those type of people, he likes Patsy Cline and Hank Williams the First and Red Slow-vine*?*), a little rap, Daft Punk, Mellow music, Barry Manilow, love songs, goofy songs, nonsense songs, tribal music, big bands, oldies, you name it. Just not a lot of modern country-western and very little blued grass and only certain rap songs. He also likes movie theme music and tv theme music from old shows like Route 66.

He can recognize almost anything written by Mozart and Bethoven, and he also likes the Baroque period of classical music.

He also will play "Jesus Christ, Superstar" and "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The War Of The Worlds" albums over and over depending on his mood, and also he is big on Beatles albums like everyone else. What I find amusing is that he really likes Reggae music, expecially Bob Marley. We have speakers out on the deck and he will sit out on the deck on a warm evening and listen to Bob Marley or one of Pink Floyd's albums, or maybe something entirely different. He is very illogical in his music tastes. I think it has to do with his Indian heritage. Music means more to him than most people, and the changing of the seasons.

He will listen to a Chopin concerto one minute and follow it with AC/DC, while reading Shakespeare or Kipling.

And do not get me started on his taste in literature. That is a well with no bottom.

Hi Vicky,

It sounds like you were describing me!  Shocked) Except, Don's musical collection is MUCH larger than mine. TV...is that the box with talking pictures, that my kids love so much? Shocked))) Literature...I'm looking for a bigger house to hold my library. LOL Maybe it is the "Indian heritage." I'm not sure if I have any Native American blood yet, but I recently discovered (known for many years) through relatives, that my mother's family shares a common white ancestor with many Cherokee.
