Taiwan: Banks shouldn't cut China Airlines funding
TAIPEI (Reuters) — Taiwan Finance Minister Lee Yung-san said on Monday banks should not cut funding to China Airlines after one of its planes mysteriously plunged into the sea over the weekend.
"Because the crash was an unexpected accident, local banks should not drop stones on a person who has already fallen into a well," Lee told parliament.
Lee said China Airlines would face pressure from insurers to hike premiums after the disaster.
China Airlines said on Sunday the carrier was due to review premiums with insurers in August, which is sure to result in higher insurance costs for the carrier from the fourth quarter when the policy is renewed.
Mystery surrounds the disaster in which China Airlines flight 611 carrying 206 passengers and 19 crew broke apart in mid-air before crashing into the Taiwan Strait. All are feared dead.
It was the Taiwan carrier's fourth fatal accident since 1994.
