I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but this is the stupidest thing I’ve heard in a long time.

Families file claim in migrants' deaths

PHOENIX – The families of 11 immigrants who died crossing the southern Arizona desert near Yuma have filed a claim against federal agencies asking for $3.75 million for each of the dead, attorneys said yesterday.

Fourteen people died in May 2001 when smugglers led the immigrants into a bleak section of the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge known as "The Devil's Path" near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The claim, the first step in filing a lawsuit, asserts the federal government failed to place water stations near the spot where the immigrants died, the families' attorneys said.

Hey Ray,

Based upon the average of $60 per day for orange pickers and average daily earnings from tomato harvesting of $50 per day, it sounds reasonable to me. If these were orange pickers working 7 day a week, each had the potential to earn that $3.75 million in approximately 62,500 days or 171 years. Had they been tomato pickers it would have taken slightly longer, 205 years. Of course I'm not even counting the loss of revenue from potential offspring. I say let's put drinking fountains and 7-11's out in the desert along the smuggling paths. ;o)))

I live in S. Florida, nothing surprises me. Many Latin Americans and Haitins look for someone to sue as soon as they get off the raft.

Why don't these Mexicans try filing a crazy claim like that in a court in Mexico.

Seems like they are saying that the U.S. Government has a duty to protect them against the risk involved in their illegal act.

Furthermore, about this $3.75 million each......is that computed on the basis of an American salary, or on the basis of what a worker in Mexico would make?  Since they are ILLEGAL they should only compute on the basis of a mexican salary.

Just my thoughts.

Stephen,

Why are you asking all these legal questions? You're the lawyer! (ROFL)

I suspect that the $3.75 million comes from the average cash payout for a super lotto winner. Sounds like that's what they're doing, trying to "hit the lotto".

And no, they're not ILLEGALS! Read the story again, they're "immigrants". I guess that's the new PC term now?

Sheeeesh!
