... in response to Re: No need to, posted by Robert D on Nov 11, 2004Citizens from the new EU countries can work and live wherever they please in the EU. No visa is necessary for travel but you still need to present your passport.
In fact I met some Poles who were claiming unemployment benefits in England. It is still difficult for the ordinary Russians to get visas to England, although businessmen have no such problems. Over 100,000 Russians are now in England. Most of them are wealthy. They cite kidnapping as the main reason for leaving Russia, even though i suspect their wealth were ill gotten as well.
The UK had a temporary work permit scheme for seasonal farm workers during summer, about 5000 Ukrainians went over every year. I'm not sure if this is still on or scrapped since they can now get farm workers from eastern Europe.
The EU is keen to include Ukraine and possibly Belarus in the EU. Problems are... these countries must meet some economic targets, democratic govs and overcome opposition from Russia.
The easiest way for a young Russian to get a visa for England is to apply for a student's visa to study English etc.
