I called my nextel information number about possibly using our nextel phones in Ukraine- I was told that yeah it is possible, if you buy a chip for my phone and oh by the way it is 4 bucks a minute... I said no thanks.... are there any other cell phones that you can use that are not real expensive for minutes etc.   I heard about att.. from a commercial on the radio but I havent investigated yet... thanks,

Keith

It is probably better to rent a cell phone over there but Sprint also offers a deal where you can get your calls from home while you are overseas.  It was about as expensive as the Nextel deal though.

I just replaced an old cellphone with a new small Nokia model. Price of the phone - including 50 units of Kyivstar's Ace/Base pre-paid service, was a smidgen over $100.

The only downside is you do not know the telephone number until you get here (Ukraine) and purchase the SIM card.

FWIW

Dan, I am thinking of doing exactly what you stated.

Please clarify regarding the approx $100.  Does this cover everything needed to actually make a phone call.  i.e.  The physical phone, the SIM chip, the payment for some minutes of call time (50 minutes I guess you are saying), all service fees for what 'a month?', any other hidden costs or costs to be needed, battery charger, etc.?

Can you be specific as to the name and address of the store where you made the purchase?

Thanks

Thats what we plan on doing as well. I checked with my current carrier here in the states and it'll be alot cheaper just to buy one in Ukraine.

Cherokee, surely someone who has traveled to the FSU so many times over the last five years he has lost count knows what a unit as related to a cell phone is. He must be pulling your leg.

And if you want to put some money where your mouth is I will scan my passport which is almost full, and send it to your e-mail.
