My wife just recently got a cell phone which is great because I can get through ANY time & not have to dial 10+ times to get through & I don't have to worry about getting disconnected. She said there are about 3 companies or so in Ukraine for cell phones & said her's was "Kiev Star" or something like that. Anyone ever heard of that? IF so how do you obtain the web page to send text messages?

The new Sprint PCS newsletter says you can arrange to receive calls while in Russia and many other foreign countries at your regular cell phone number.  It may require you to rent a cell phone in the other country since technologies vary from country to country.  Be prepared to pay dearly for the privilege.  The rate was $1.50 per minute for the city I checked.

likerly a better solution is to rent a cell there,
i have before and it was very reasonable and easy to get minutes for.

heck you can buy one , the servive abd the minutes o na card - for under the amount youd pay at the $2.00 a minure rate of many US based carriers offering service in eastern europe?

just a thought..

The idea was for if you wanted to receive your regular Sprint PCS calls from the USA with your cell phone.  You would have to rent a phone from them since they use GSM in Russia and Ukraine.  It would be cheaper to rent a cell phone over there from some other company and not get your US calls forwarded.  This is just to let you know you have that option.

Frank-
somebody provuided you with the link.

you can use you PC to send thru thier SMS gateway
( not reliable at all, i might add)

or you SHOULD be able to send an SMS from your phone to hers by just sending to the complete number -
example- 011 380 670 555555
and she shouild be abl;e to send it back as long as it is a complete number format - 1 615 555 4545

My wife has kyivstar
and I use cingular wireless.
both are GSM compatable phonbes

no problems sending direct SMS fairly reliably.

__________

as you said on regular calls the  quality and  reliabilty of connesting is much better thru the GSM network than thru the overloaded regular local ukraine lines,

so its the way to go for sure..
also incoming calls (even international)
became free on all cell providers in ukraine a short time ago.

anyone with a serious "romanbtioc interest" and spending a lot on calls ,would ne well of to get her a mobile.

if you do not want to pop for a new one-
you (or her)can get real decent ones at the bazaars used for $50
or less if its just an "interest" you arnt so sure about,,

and a bit of phone time might help make your decision one way or another much easier

Be thankful for her she is on Kyivstar as it is one of the two best.  The other is UMC. When you go to see her be sure that you purchase a Kyivstar card for your phone if you have GSM and plan to use it there or you may finding that you need to get a second mortgage when you return.  I spent two months in Ukraine vacationing and waiting for our exit interview in Warsaw with my wife, Anna.  When I arrived home my cell bill was well over $2800 just from Kyivstar and UMC charges.

The 2 biggest, by far, are Kyivstar and UMC. Following those are Golden Telecom, Welcom, and DCC.

You asked specifically about Kyivstar. Their website (in English) is: http://www.kyivstar.net/site.php/en - and from there you will see a link on the left side of the page to "Sending SMS" - (Short Messaging Service - also known as text messages).

I hope this helps.

Golden Telecom - to provide consultancy services to them.

I hope to get a contract in the next couple of weeks.

Not quite ownership - but a step in the right direction --smile--.

Dan,

Is Jeff Howley still at Golden Telecom?  He was still there when I left Ukraine in 2001.  Nice guy.

Seen you chumming it up with Warren Buffett and Donald Trump.  I saw in the tabloids your photo and could have swore you were having lunch with Michael Powell, head of the FCC.

[This message has been edited by AJ277]

my wife (currently in ukraine)
has kyivstar mobile service ..

and i use cingular wireless here stateside.
both are GMS capatible phones.

we have no problems sending SMS either direction, just using the full telephone number

region and country code..
ie: 011 380 555 555555

her sending to me 1 834 896 1234

also english isnt a problem as most phones there have latin chracters and can read ,and send, them.
in fact my wifes phone is a good samsung that is popular there ,
and doesnt even have cryllic alphabet available.

----------------------------------------------

in the past i had a non GSM phone and had to put in
a full  number and address of the kyivstar SMS gateway-

ie: 380670555555@kyivstar.mobile.net

_________

you should b eable to go to the provder website and get answers on the SMS capatabilty and process bewteen providers.

My wife used to have UMC and she was able to SMS me and I her without any problem.  The only thing that may be a problem is that all the cell phones there are pre-programmed for Russian language and she will need to know how to change the language to English unless you can read Russian.
