... in response to How often does this go on?, posted by TwoBitBandit on Mar 7, 2004I think the percentages will vary greatly depending on the source of the interpreter.
If the source of the interpreter is coming from an agency that is maybe not well known or maybe suspect, the percentages of a corrupt interpreter could be as high as 20-30%.
Interpreters from agencies considered good you might have this situation, or one similar, happening 7 to 9% of the times. One never knows when a young, attractive female interpreter might have interest in her client. All the more reason for guys to try to plan ahead regarding interpreters they might use. I think for the most part I would recommend shying away from interpreters working directly for agencies and try to set up with an independent interpreter.
Depending on where a guy is going I think he should ask on this and a few other well respected non-commercial Russian discussion boards for recommendations for interpreters. It is probably wise to make contact with and have access to two or three different interpreters in case you do not like your first choice interpreter or your interpreter becomes un-available. Have back-up interpreters!
I am amazed when I hear of guys who were charged $10 an hour for an interpreter. ONLY in Moscow or St. Pete would one be expected to pay $9 or 10 an hour. Kiev will vary from $5 to $6 with $7 being the absolute top dollar. Odessa $5 or $6 an hour and the rest of the FSU, $5 an hour
