Seems to be a newbie to the net who has yet to turn off his [Caps Lock].  But hey, at least he's here trying to learn.  How many guys take the trip completely clueless to what they might encounter?
So, what are some basic rules?
1. Try to learn some of the native language before you go.
2. Do not hury to get engaged on a first short "get to know each other" trip. (Save it for a longer trip.)
3. Read up on where the trouble areas are and avoid them.
4. Find out if the water is safe to drink before you go, know if you should stick to the bottled stuff.
5. Be wary of back ally currency traders.
6. Rarely outside native English speaking countries do pedestrians have the right of way.
7. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.  There are sharks in the water who are certainly aware of you.

A good place to start BEFORE you go and before you make any commitments is to learn everything that you can about the Philippines, and the Filipino culture. You can find a wealth of information on the Internet if you dig a little. Also, I highly recommend the book "Culture Shock! Philippines" by Roces. If it's not in your local bookstore, you can find it on amazon.com. And try reading through the archives on this forum.

Also, if you are corresponding with a lady on-line, you should expect that at least several other girls are also reading your messages. The concept of privacy has a whole different meaning over there, so be aware.

My advice is to make your first trip more of a vacation than a wife-hunting trip. Definitely go to meet your friend, but don’t commit all of your time to her in advance, just in case… :-)

YANKEES SUCK!!! I'll be going back May 14th to visit my wife for a few weeks. Maybe you'll be there too? Expect Massive poverty next to extreme wealth, Beautiful beaches with litter, friendly helpful people mixed with scam artists,
Churchgoing catholics who work as bargirls, A confused congested capitol with peaceful provinces, Basketball players who are too short, talented musicians who never get beyond the local Karaoke bar. For me the Philippines is a land of contrasts and contridictions and Im still not quite sure why I like the country so much. I cant wait to go back but I find myself complaining about the country when Im there. Makes no sense to me!
