Okay, I know that I need a PAL vcr or dvd player to watch Russian cassettes and dvds. But if I have a PAL player do I need a PAL tv to use it? I was considering buying a dvd/vcr combo on my next trip and stocking up on movies and such for my wife when she comes here. Need to know if I have to get a tv as well.

Also, on my wife's computer there was a program called a "region killer" for her dvd rom. Her windows crashed and I reinstalled it but my discs didn't have a copy of this program. Any ideas where that could be found and downloaded?

Do not buy these things in Russia. They are all in a catalog here in the states in her language. They play on NTSC players.

I know of several internet stores that sell russian movies in the US. They are much more expensive than what I can buy in Russia. And have less selection. If I ship them to myself or carry them I don't need to pay import taxes either. That's fairly high on cds and cassettes that I've ordered from the US in the past. Also we can continue to use her video camera for ourselves. She already has a collection that will be garbage without the right vcr. I've converted tapes and that gets expensive in a hurry. For home movies that are shot here we can send copies back to friends and relatives. The PAL equiment that I've used in Russia was also NTSC compatible so it will work here as well as there. I've thought about this for awhile and have my reasons for wanting multi format capable equipment. The only thing is it would be easier for me is if I could find a local store to buy the PAL player and tv from.

What we ended up doing and it has worked exellent for us was buy a "region free" DVD player on e-bay. The brand name is "Digix" and it was only about $50.00  Plays exellent, CD's, DVD's from anywhere.

That's a thought. I haven't made up my mind yet and it will be about 3 months before I'm back in Russia. Could be another 7 months before she can come here from what the Canadian embassy tells us. Just thinking and asking for opinons at the moment. Seriously thinking about a dvd/vcr combo like I've seen around.

Yes, if you have a PAL dvd player or VCR you need a PAL TV.

PAL is a lot different from NTSC.  There are more scan lines, the refresh frequency is different, the colorburst frequency and count is different...yadda yadda yadda.

If you feed PAL input into an NTSC tv you'll get either garbage or a distorted and noisy black & white image.
