Hughes, who spoke no Russian, met Kristich and Nogina,
who spoke little English, in the hotel a few days before his
death, Alexeyev said.

"It was a chance acquaintance," he said.

On the eve of his death, Hughes and his fiancee had a quarrel,
and Hughes spent the evening talking to the two women in the bar,
Alexeyev said.  "He invited the two women to the room, and they
invited the two men," he said. "The women opened the door while
he was in the bathroom, and the men slipped in. It all happened
very quickly."

A maid found Hughes' body at 5:20 a.m. His nose was
broken, in a sign of a struggle.

Your easy prey in their land, especially if you don't speak their language.

No doubt, these ladies should have gotten a equal sentenance as their men friends.  Especially, since they took measures to cover their identity.
-----------
Example:

I myself once was in a bar (Cowboy in Kiev) where I got hooked up to this lady and when we got outside her girlfriend showed up and wanted to come along.  I said NO, as I felt too uncomfortable in this situation.  Stick with your gut feelings guys...

Needless to say, the very next day I was to meet my real lady friend (different girl who stood me up the previous night which was why I went out) at a bar/pool hall along with Oatmeal and Rostick, while walking through the establishment their was my cowboy aquantance shooting pool!

Talk about feeling sick to my stomach.

That really curbed my appetite for women I really didn't come to meet.

How many of you guys have had a similar experience?

Bill's story shows he's not as dumb as people
make him out to be (how's that for praise, Bill?).

Here's a RedFlag! markup of his narrative:

=== I myself once was in a bar (Cowboy in Kiev) where I got hooked up to
=== this lady and when we got outside her girlfriend showed up and wanted
=== to come along.

RedFlag! he's in a bar, feelin blue, not his usual self
RedFlag! been stood up, he's easy pickins (shark smells blood in water)
RedFlag! leaves with girl (way to go Bill! woo! woo! woo!)
RedFlag! an unknown girl, new bar, new city & country (how drunk was Bill?)
RedFlag! Bills being isolated and the girl now has backup
RedFlag! backup girl was waiting outside (gee what a coincidence!)

=== I said NO, as I felt too uncomfortable in this
=== situation. Stick with your gut feelings guys...

RedFlag! remaining sober brain cell figures it out
RedFlag! IF IT FEELS LIKE A BAD SETUP THEN THATS WHAT IT IS

=== Needless to say, the very next day I was to meet my real lady friend
=== (different girl who stood me up the previous night which was why I went
=== out) at a bar/pool hall along with Oatmeal and Rostick, while walking
=== through the establishment their was my cowboy aquantance shooting
=== pool!

RedFlag! She spends a lot of time in bars, it seems
RedFlag! she hooks up with drunk foreigners like Bill!
RedFlag! Bill feels happy to be with friends, remembers being alone
RedFlag! was her gangster boyfriend/husband also playing pool?

=== Talk about feeling sick to my stomach.
=== That really curbed my appetite for women I really didn't come to meet.
=== How many of you guys have had a similar experience?

RedFlag! there was no introduction
RedFlag! Bill dodged a bullet, guys

Bill, it would have been different if you were introduced,
if someone who knew both of you knew you were out together,
and if you met with optimism in a good setting, rather than
while nursing a bruised ego in a dive.

OATMEAL...

He was there as well, but I left before he did and it's a well know thing, that if you don't leave with a lady, you can expect to have a cops at the base of the hill to ask for your documents, as their lookin for a bribe.

As I recall, oatmeal said a cop in the darken area told him to come to him and oatmeal said "no" to the cop....look for it in the archives.   Oatmeal, walked home.  I instead took a cab with my prize date...thus, bypassing the cops.

While it is true that Oatmeal and one other person on this board has mentioned a incident of police harassment--------this:"it's a well know thing, that if you don't leave with a lady, you can expect to have a cops at the base of the hill to ask for your documents, as their lookin for a bribe" is a bit of a stretch. You gained all this infinite knowledge in what---2 trips to Ukraine? Has the stench of bull feces to me.

Interested to know how many cruise bars in foreign lands to find their soul mate.

Seems counter-intuitive to me.

As I did ask myself that night, what am I doing here with this girl...when I could be back home cranking out messages on the internet.

Oh! Yea.  I was there to helping the Ukrainian GDP numbers.

I am not sure I understood your story from the bar.   Is there something missing?

You got to remember that he is one of those guys who thinks that any woman he meets was dead a few minutes before he came along. Only with his appearance did she have permission to come alive. She could not possibly have "any" kind of social life or interests. For her to enjoy a game of billiards is a cardinal sin, let alone being in a night club or bar. He alone is able to pick what kind of interests his woman is to have. And after he has decided that he cannot interact with more than one woman at once, the subject-woman is supposed to die again so that he won't have to be reminded of his short-comings by ever seeing her again.

boy, glad you cleared that up, sorta.

all of this is just over my head I guess, not to mention it seems like a lot work and great distance to just get a date.

Could have stayed here for that kind of abuse.
