Northwest airlines has some special airfares on their website.  i booked an august 29th departure returning sep 8/9 for $832.  downside is i have to spend the nite in amsterdam, but figure it's worth the trade off. and is about $200 cheaper than anything else i found for my desired dates.

perhaps you could connect through one of Northwest's hub in Detroit as those flights arrive in Amsterdam early morning (6:00 am to 8:00am) which gives you plenty of time to connect onto KLM's two flights to Kiev at 10:00 am and 11:00.  (The 10:00 flight is operated by Ukraine International. Try for the 11:00 KLM operated flight if you can.)  I have done this several times.

So basically once you pay for transfers from the Amsterdam airport to your hotel and one or two nights (overnight on the return flight?) at those wonderfully high priced Western European hotels you've probably broken even or more than likely exceded your savings (if you have to overnight on the way back) and arrive in Kiev a day later than a more direct flight. It's also a pain in the butt to pick up your luggage and then recheck it the next day. On the other hand if you're looking forward to spending some time in Amsterdam and seeing a little bit of that city than it's probably not a bad trip.  From my traveling experience it's worth the extra $200 to avoid the overnighter just to save some money.  Sometimes though coming back out of Ukraine especially on Luftansa you are often forced to overnight in Frankfurt, and it's just not much fun.  Good luck to you and enjoy your trip.

I have been to amsterdam 4 times, recently as last month.
Hotels there are very expensive.
The cheapest way to go is to buy a train ticket from airport to central station and return I think its $12 total, takes 1/2 hour.
U could spend a night in a hostel, I stayed once in Bulldog, you may be in a group room, but cost will be about $20, or spend $80 for a cheap hotel.
