At least she's upfront about it.

This little soon-to-be-20-year-old wrote:

"I am young and beautiful. I am looking for serious relations with a respectable, serious man who is independant as to the money, and stands firmly on his feet. Who would be able to satisfy my whims. I don't have a desire to talk just for nothing in internet, and don't have time so I won't answer such letters..."

Independent as to money means he supports himself-- he has a decent job and can afford a wife. The part about wasting her time and that she can't talk for nothing-- it means she won't/can't waste time with people who aren't serious about getting married (unemployed guys, immature guys, guys who aren't sure, guys who won't ever visit her, etc.). It has nothing to do with money.

How many profiles say they are looking for a generous man. What do you think this means? The agencies that insert "generous" are smooth translators. This girl probably wrote her own ad.

My fiancee got lots of letters from people who she thought was a waste of time for various reasons. She is extremely busy. She literally doesn't have time to waste answering such letters.

I think you are reading sinister motives in here that aren't there. Do not forget, she isn't a native speaker of English. There is a nice Frenchman who posts here who sometimes takes affront at what WE write because he didn't understand the innocuous things we wrote.

My wife had tried writing guys on the internet for 2 years and gave up, because they were all time (and money) wasters for her.  She requested that her account be closed.  Months later, on a lark, she dropped into the office and lo and behold, my letter had just arrived there and was waiting for her.  What's really bizarre is that my letter was supposed to have gone to a different Marina, but was misrouted to her by mistake...

Somewhere out there the Twilight Zone theme is playing...

I agree about the letters that were wasting her time. My wife had a similar experience regarding letters from men who were not very serious. I would say that more than 9 out of 10 of her letters were a little flaky.

Just as American men have a screening process, its reasonable to assume these women have a similar screening process that is largely based on whether a man is serious about pursuing a relationship. Its completely reasonable that a Russian or Ukrainian woman could be looking to avoid men who are obviously not going to do anything other than write letters.

If I were young, still looking, and interested in this girl I would certainly exchange a few letters before coming to any conclusions.  Even today my wife and I get our "wires crossed" due to my assumption that she now understands English as well as anyone else here.
