newbie (again)

Well Guys,
After a few years hiatus from this board, where I mostly lurked, I have decided to finally start to take my search for that special someone for real this time.  I began to be intrigued with the idea of an asian bride ever since I returned from working in southeast asia for six months in 1997.  I fell in love with the culture and the people.  unfortunately I was only 24 at the time and didn't have the guts to follow through.  I think my family and friends would support me, but I think they would also frown upon it just because of the usuall "buying a girl" mentality.  Obviously I will have to work on that one, but I have made up my mind and I will stand alone if I have to.  I have read most of your posts and I know you guys are going to be a huge bonus for me in my search, and for that I thank you in advance.

Hi Paul, and Welcome,

You don't have to stand alone - you'll get plenty of support from this board and maybe even turn some cyber friends into some non-cyber friends.  I wish I had known about PL when I was going through the process because, having only the K-1 FAQ page to go by and the admittedly one-sided view from Cherry Blossoms, I felt pretty much alone at that time.  I thought I was a trail blazer, a maverick, or somewhat crazy )

My family was skeptical but they remained open minded as I took three trips to asia before getting married.  Today when people ask how we met I tell them, like Howard, that we met through an internet singles service, which is the truth, without distortion.  It's amazing how people react positively to our penpal story when they hear that it began with the internet; people say "Wow - that's cool."  If I had used the old, very inaccurate "MOB site" term I'm sure the reaction would be much different.

You may get some of that "How could you get involved in illicit sex trafficking of women" nonsense when you're starting out, but after you get married, everyone will start saying, "how romantic, finding each other on opposite sides of the world." Just keep your mouth shut to the naysayers. What business is it of theirs, anyway. Your friends and family obviously know you have been to the far east and like it. Hey, if you happen to fall in-love while on vacation there, it'll be considered "normal."

Paul,

I once feared the "Bought a Bride" Mentality and was pleasently surprised when I didn't get any of it :c)  Now, I know my friends and family are different than yours, but I think you're in for a pleasent surprise.  I just told everyone we met through a singles site on the internet, the truth, and no one ever batted an eye :c)

Ask lots of questions and keep your eyes open.  Don't be afraid to ask the tough questions, but be tactful enough to know when it's right to ask them :c)

We're always open here, 24/7/365  LOL

I got that "Bought a Bride" look yesterday (first time) at the supermarket from an 'Amy Carter-Ugly Birkenstock wearing college aged Fem-Nazi.' I just smiled at her and praised God for all of my blessings and that I wasn't married to her. ;o)))

hi pauld,
i married a filipino 2 years ago, i spend most of my time in the philippines, i am in virgina right now, tending to so business. marrying my filipino is something i should have done 25 years ago. she is my world, she care more for me than i do for myself. as to family, i think i have slid down the totom pole in the eyes of my family, and its because they perfer my wife to me! she is the apple of their eye. they just love her. me they have to acceot because i am the first born, and the only male.
do not worry about what others think, only what you need to make yourself complete.
