Your friend was correct, over here you’d have to go through a bunch of stuff that would take around 6 months probably. Over in the Phils, they tend to be much more willing to bend the rules, but it also depends on the policies of the local church. My wife’s niece married an American guy in the church in Cebu, but first he wanted to convert. The priest gave him some books to study and he did the whole thing in a week or so, primarily because they wanted to get married while he was over there and they were on a tight schedule.
That reminds me of a couple I knew. He was in the Navy stationed in the Phils and she was around 6 months pregnant. They went to the local church to make the advance arrangements for a wedding a couple of months down the road. When the priest saw that she was pregnant, he offered to marry them on the spot, so they did it. Her sister was all p.o.’d because she was planning a big wedding (LOL!). The church here in the U.S. tends to be much stricter in following the rules.
