Going to Moscow ??

hey,

  In August I have some time off, and had considered going to Moscow, but the cost of an aparment seems prohibitivley high. It seems like it would be cheaper to fly to  another city,  and get an apt. Any comments/suggestions

  Also i ws wondering if anyone could recomend a good {written} russian course, basic level.

Just to warn you, if you did not already know...Moscow in August is very hot and humid. I was there last summer for 2 weeks and was miserable the entire time...the humidity was 95%!

I did spend 3 days in St.Petersburg during that same visit, it was more comfortable and much less crowded than Moscow.

  Hot and humid isn't to much of a change from where I live
The big problem with Moscow looks to be an apartment. From what I've seen 700+ dollars, and that's if your lucky enough to find one.
  Like I said earlier I can get good price to Moscow, but I don't think staying there is practical. Any advice/experience with travel inside Russia is welcome.

Moscow is perfect for getting your feet wet. You can find many English speakers and also have a great time! My first time there was for 3 weeks and I didn't want to leave. I took nothing but a translation dictionary and on the rare times that I needed it I had a good time with it. If you're going it alone you'll most likely find more comfort there and not be frustraited with your first trip. If you're there long enough you can take train excursions to small towns and back.

St. Petersburg is interesting.  Why not go somewhere in the summer where Russians or Ukrainians go to like the Black Sea coast?  Apartments are way cheaper, but the flights will be more.

How much are flights from Moscow to other places? I can get really good travel deals to Moscow {only}.

Also any ideas on a starter reading course in Russian

I think my tickets from Moscow to Volgograd were about $150 US. Other cities would probably be similar in cost.

Teach Yourself basic Russian was recommended as a good starter set for Russian. I have the grammar book but haven't been studying as much as I should. I also have Living Languages Russian books and tapes. They are good for learning useful phrases. Russian is a hard language to learn on your own. I've been at it for a year and a half(admittedly not diligently) and I'm still pretty basic on my understanding.
