Sounds like Senator Legarda is on the rag :-). Notice how the author sneaks in the prostitution angle? Also, I found the last paragraph rather interesting.

Almost ANYTHING these politicians say is bull...

Get this folks, the President of the Philippines has
assured filipinos that the 600 or so visiting American
troops will be closely regulated so they cannot ..."bring
prostition back to the Philippines." On what planet does she spend her time anyway?
Remember, comments from Politicians there are just rattled off the cuff to distract the public from job #1, theft from the public purse.
Find a good filipina...work hard at it all, cross you fingers...pray a lot...and hopefully, be happy. The rest?
Put it around your rose bushes to keep them green.

I think Kevin will also find that last paragraph interesting Shocked)  The woman says "most" girls, while Febtember's experience is 3 out of 10 with bad intentions.  The debate over the numbers will never end...

Jim,
What I think the readers of this article have to keep in mind concerning this quote about such a high percentage of women using the men, is that it is a statement from one person only.  If you look around, you can find somebody who will say, think or believe ANYTHING under the sun.  Another factor skewing things here is the fact that this woman who is beiing quoted works in a bar so the ladies she sees are going to be the lower classed ones who would tend to be more desperate and try to use a guy to move up.  Women who frequent bars are not good wife prospects and anybody who uses bars to look for a wife is increasing his risk factor drastically, in my opinion.   Then again if you read the last two paragraphs again:

********************************************************
She also believes some girls are open to the idea of a marriage to a foreigner which can be abruptly ended once they are have settled overseas.

"The idea is to go there (abroad) and then divorce, most girls are thinking that way...the guys are the ones being exploited," she laughs.
********************************************************

Notice it says "some" girls at first.  Some could mean two.  Then she switches to "most".  Which is it?   In my opinion, this is just the typical journalistic tactic of finding somebody who will make a statement that agrees with the writers already already arrived at conclusions.   In my opinion the only thing this article is good for is filling in during a toilet paper shortage.  LOL  Smiley

of the group of some girls that seek marriage, most of those in that group have bad intentions. There's too much stuff in the media and from other people about the dangers of these relationships to simply dismiss this as poor journalism or to nay sayers.  Where there's smoke there's fire.  I think the discussion of green card hunters is irrelevant.  Many of these relationships fail for whatever reason and those who think that marrying a foreign bride will guarantee a happy marriage forever are just deceiving themselves.  Even some of the members here in successful relationships say it is luck. I observed a 40% to 50% failure rate at the social gatherings I attended here in the USA.

I think the American journalistic reflex is to make a show of objectivity by getting "both sides" of the story, even if there are 10 sides to it. So after talking about exploitation of females they just flip it around to suggest exploitation of males, as if these were 2 halves of the whole. The idea of a mutually beneficial exchange was apparently too much of a stretch.

Steve,

Good points about the single source and the journalistic practice of reporting only info which supports the desired conclusion.  It is certainly not like the 'Scientific Method' of experimentation, in which a hypothesis is made, data collected, and then ALL the data is disclosed and examined in an attempt to either prove or disprove the hypothesis.

The Nipa Hut gold digger poll (anonymous) had results with green card shark numbers very low, less than 10% I think.  My guess is that those numbers are pretty close to being accurate, but it's just a guess - dboards are not a random sample and the large proportion of horror stories seems to contradict the poll results.  Still, those horror stories may be misleading because success stories don't generate as much interest and many of those people seem to drift away after awhile.  Why?  Maybe they're just busy getting on with their lives, or they don't need the technical or moral support of the board anymore.

As for the prostitution angle, I think that's ridiculous with regard to MOB sites.  These 'journalists' are either too lazy or too dishonest to make the distinction between MOB sites and japayuki-like sex industry recruitment gangs, IMO.

Hi Jimbo,

It sure is frightening that INS sights some of these same journalists, as if they were experts, in their reports to Congress.

I suppose INS's best advice would be to "buy" a light-weight bride to save on shipping costs.

I read the article.  My personal opinion about this is that I don't know what the true numbers for sweetheart swindling or sexual exploitation are.  I'm just hopeful that like you, and like Febtember, that the "MOB" route might be the vehicle for me to find pure and genuine love, unless by chance, my path crosses with somebody by a more conventional, socially acceptable means.  But given my preferences, other means are purely chance.  It seems that most available and eligible Filipinas can not be found in the United States.

I personally think that the incidences of sweetheart swindling far outweigh the incidences of sex slavery or whatever one wants to call it.  I've yet to know of a guy who went the "MOB" route with deviant, perverse intentions.  But I sure know of alot of accounts of guys who've gotten burnt.  I just find it demeaning when the media portrays heterosexual Western men who's preferences are for Filipina (or other Asian women), who are only exercising a major endeavor of their life (looking for a partner), as sexual predators out to exploit the naive, impoverished, ignorant or vulnerable.

Hey Ray,

Sorry, I have to disagree with you...It sounds more like Toxic Shock Syndrome to me. It seems as though something has crawled up inside the good senator and died!

Movie stars and TV personalities...don't be surprised if Senator Loren Legarda (ABS-CBN Newscaster) doesn't end up as President one day. She is now a favorite on the talk show circuit.

This is her opinion on pen pal clubs: "They exclusively and boldly sell Filipinas as brides and sex commodities," says Senator Loren Legarda. I wonder why she doesn't go up against the Japanese "entertainment" industry? I guess she is just against legal-age inter-racial marriages, but not teenage Filipina sex slaves going to Japan, many of whom are underage.

Do you know what the acronym LOREN stands for:
"She has encapsulated these concerns in the acronym LOREN --"L"aw and "O"rder; "R"ights of Women, youth and children; "E"ducation, environment and employment; and "N"ationalism."

Nothing about honesty and integrity - I hear she can get you a real good deal on stolen cellphones...
