I wish the list a Merry Christmas, from Brazil.  There is no snow, no cold, no ice here where I am.  I do not miss it.

I hope Hoda and other New Yorkers are hanging in there.

In case anyone did not hear, the U.S. House passed this resolution on December 15, 2005:

H. Res. 579

In the House of Representatives, U.S.,

Whereas Christmas is a national holiday celebrated on December 25; and

Whereas the Framers intended that the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States would prohibit the establishment of religion, not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialog: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives--

(1) recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas ;

(2) strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas ; and

(3) expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions, for those who celebrate Christmas.

Attest:

Clerk.

A little history--President Grant established the Christmas  holiday in 1870. President Grant also believed in separation of church and state, and was against churches being exempted from equal taxation.  Anotherwords his thoughts were to exempt the property of any church organization, one then has basically imposed a tax on the whole community.  One should pay at the same property tax rate as any business or corporation.
