Google Earth.

I'd seen it mentioned here once before a few months back, and was reminded of it again by Senor Michael Savage's praise of it a moment ago on his radio show.

So, I download it, and install it, and a globe pops up.  I tinker with the globe, revolve it, casually zoom in with my mouse wheel, and am stunned how awesome this powerful little toy is.  You can zoom down to the level of parked vehicles, and if your eyes are sharp enough, individuals standing out in the open.

I immediately tried Pucallpa, a jungle city in Peru, where my ex and here family are from.  The detail wasn't as sharp as when I tried Lima itself, where I could clearly see vehicles and even the outlines of parking spaces.

Funny.  As I right this, Savage suddenly has a change of heart; I here him screaming on the radio in the background.  He thinks G.E. should now be outlawed!  Claims that it's a tool that will aid terrorists.

Well, until it is (if it is), it's a must for travellers.

Peace out!

P.S.  Just found Peru's main fleet of naval vessels off the northern coast of Lima.  In port, they've got about a dozen frigates and destroyers, six subs., sub tenders, dry docks, refueling/resupply ships, and even a battle ship.  A decent sized, modern navy.  I guess now I'll  have to call off my "Bay of Lima" invasion.

"Moussed-haired billionaires!"

That's what he called the founders of Google.

He started off his show saying he no longer believes in God after discovering Google Earth.  And then a caller makes a comment about the downside of it, and Savage flies off the hook, asking "Where's Chertoff! Where's Rumsfeld!"  A total 180 in his opinion of it.  Very funny.

None of the Google Earth images I have seen are even from this year. I wouldn't think that terrorists would be able to get "up to date" intel from it.

I agree.  It wouldn't be helpful if they hoped to target any newly constructed facility.  But the coordinates of any existing building in any U.S. city are static (unless they actually relocate the buildings).

Still, pretty amazing to see Saddam's palaces in Iraq, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the monuments in D.C., etc., with little effort.

Yeah. I am hooked on it. I can't really get any good shots of Colombia though. It is amazing to live in a day and age where something like Google Earth can exist.

Mi esposa's grandfather was in the Peruvian Navy back in the 1940's and has photos of himself and his ships taken at many different locations around the world, including NYC. I was impressed at the equipment they had back then, considering it's Peru.

"I was impressed at the equipment they had back then, considering it's Peru."

My guess is that the War of the Pacific (1879-83) with Chile and a subsequent war with Ecuador triggered this focus on a robust navy.  They appear much better prepared to fend off any more land grabs by their neighbors.

Someone at another site confirmed that Peru's navy consists of: "...8 Frigates, 1 Battleship, 6 Submarines, 2 Destroyers and 6 Missile Boats."
