..what happened when it came to removing the brides' garter? i read about this on another board and was reminded of this same "custom" after seeing the novela i'm watching (todos quieren con marilyn) but in both cases it wasn't the groom who removed it but rather some other lucky guy that was chosen, is this common? the scene was this, the single guys gave up a  shoe, these were placed under the brides' wedding dress, the groom pulled the shoes out one at a time until one was left, the owner of that shoe pulled the garter off of her leg with his teeth, getting a little too close for comfort. are there variations to this or is this how its done? i was at a wedding the other day and the groom was the one who pulled it off with his hands and then threw it into the crowd of single guys like the bride did with her bouquet.

Yes, that is what happened at our wedding reception. I was not too happy about this "custom" of having some lucky soltero remove the bride's garter from her leg with his teeth.

..did you know this was going to happen at the reception or was it a complete surprise? i mean, did you go along with it because you were caught by surprise or maybe because you felt this was what colombians do at weddings? if you didn't know and had been told beforehand, would you have objected and said no way? i'll be calling my fiance tonight and bring it up to see what she says.

It was a complete surprise. Since then I have heard from some other people that yes, it is a custom. If I had known beforehand, I would have said no way. However at the time, you don't really want to cause a scene so what the hell.

i understand your position completely about not causing a scene, especially if everyone there was expecting it. it's too bad that you didn't know ahead of time. i wonder if its a cachaco custom because my fiance who is from barranquilla has never heard of this. i mentioned it to her and she said no, that the weddings she's been to its the groom that removes la liga.

That is interesting. The custom that she describes is similar to ours here where it is the groom that does it not some single guy guest. I guess you lucked out!
