At the base of a mist covered mountain, north of Palmira, Colombia lies one of Colombia’s most unique hotel / spas.
Hotel Meson de la Sierra, translated as The Inn of the Mountain Range, is a country retreat with a beautiful backdrop of the mountain behind and a panoramic view of the beautiful Cauca valley below and before it.
Built by the owner, Fernando Cortes’ grandfather, over 50 years ago as simply a weekend retreat for friends and family. The retreat houses a restaurant, private winery, and full service hotel and spa. The grounds boast stone walkways and lush trees and an incredible stone swimming pool which is fed continuously by water from a nearby spring. The water flows from the spring through a rock canal that runs through the main social room in the hotel to the swimming pool. The architecture of the hotel itself is quite unique with a combination of wood and stone reminiscent of a castle design.
The rooms at the hotel range from private suites to multi-bed dorm rooms. Prices per night vary from $36 USD to $45 USD a night and include 3 meals a today from their house restaurant. The rooms have private bathrooms and furniture. The private suites are spacious with spectacular views of the valley and private bathrooms.
Spa services include facials, skin treatments and massages. You can also take yoga classes at their outdoor pavilion area.
Hotel Meson de la Sierra also wants to take care of your spirit. Parts of the services offered are tarot readings and classes to understanding tarot readings and your place in the universe. The hotel features and teaches alternative medicines by professionals and doctors who specialize in the field.
If you are into the metaphysical aspects of life and your feeling a little out of synch, the hotel has a room and terrace at the highest part of the home with a spectacular view of the valley and the mountain. The room is set up for spiritual meditation complete with tatamis, cushions, pillows, incense, candles and anything else you wish for inward contemplation.
If you want a little more excitement to your weekend getaway, the hotel has an association with Destino Adventura who are an extreme sports company based in Cali, Colombia. One of the perks of staying at the hotel is the discount you receive for paragliding rides at the summit of the mountain above the hotel. A jeep will pick you up from the hotel and begin the trek through the small towns and villages along the unincorporated road to the Falcon’s Club at the top of the mountain. From there, you will receive a class on tandem flight with the paragliding wings with your pilot. Flights are approximately 30 to 40 minutes in length and you will never see a more beautiful view or have a more exhilarating experience. You will land not far from the hotel where another jeep will take you back to the hotel grounds. Prices for the flight are about $35 USD before your discount.
